Reds to wait on new boss
    BARNSLEY
    By Simon Meeks
BARNSLEY won't appoint a new manager until next week at the earliest.
Oakwell chairman Gordon Shepherd has confirmed that caretaker boss Simon Davey will remain in charge for the match at Leeds United on Saturday after tonight's match with Southend at Oakwell.
Shepherd explained that the board would meet next week to "sift through the serious contenders and sort out the ifs, buts and maybes".
A win tonight and a point or three at Leeds on Saturday will certainly lift Davey's chances of landing the post on a permanent basis.
Said Davey: "I'm taking each day as it comes, I've been preparing the players for tonight; on Wednesday I'll come in and prepare them for Saturday. I'm going to do that until someone tells me not to.
"When you start out on the coaching trail you always want to be at the top, coach the best players you can. So to come from an academy to a Championship game is pleasing. It can give you a good buzz."
Davey, who was appointed academy manager this season, has yet to declare that he wants the post but he is qualified.
"I've been a coach now for seven years and I've got every qualification that's been thrown at me," he said.
"I got the pro licence in the summer, which prepares you for any eventuality. Luckily doing that has prepared me for what's in store for the next two weeks or so.
"I think I'm ready to coach pros, I've done it in the past at Preston and it doesn't daunt me in any way."
Directors have already backed him to the extent of allowing him to appoint Ryan Kidd his No 2.
Kidd, who was at Preston North End at the same time as Davey, has quit his job on the coaching staff`at Bury to work at Oakwell.
He will be in the dugout tonight as Davey attempts to secure a second win in a row for the club.
Ahead of the match against bottom-of-the-Championship club Southend, Davey will check on the fitness of skipper Paul Reid, full-back Bobby Hassell and Saturday's scorer, Grant McCann.
Hassell has an ankle injury and is set to have pain-killing injections ahead of kick-off at Oakwell. McCann suffered a dead-leg in Saturday's 1-0 win over Ipswich Town.

    If Davey wants the job...

...perhaps what he needs to say is "I've got all the qualifications to manage in the Premiership"

That kind of ambition should win over the board straight away :pff

If we win tonight and pick up a point or 3 at Leeds, then i think Shep and the Board will give the job to Davey.

He's more qualified than any previous manager, at last we have also someone in who can coach our defence. If he dosn't get the job i can see him being an assistant to the next manager, with the guy Kidd taking over the reigns at the Acadamy. IMHO.

Nowt against Davey...............but........and its a BIG but

Can we afford to give the job to an unknown quantity when we are at the side of the abyss and we are looking into it
Nowt against Davey, he could be the best man for the job
But we dunt know that, and neither does anybody else
    We need a proven manager
this is probably going to be the expensive option, but I think its the only option open to us at this point in the development of the club

So my advice is - get Dowie on a short term contract e.g. 2 years, see how he goes.
Put Davey back in charge of the kids and the reserves and see how he goes.
In two years time Davey could then step up to be first team manager

He's a top bloke to have at a club like ours... but..

my only fear is that we give him the job and then if things don't work out we loose him.

I'd rather get an experienced man in and keep Davey in the back ground continuing the good work he's done with the Reserves/Academy...

Anyone who gets a chance, go down to Oakwell one tea time and watch the young uns training, from under 7's upwards, its amazing...

Agree, he probably is a top bloke..............and I feel sorry for him

If we were midtable with a strong squad then fine, give him the job
But we are relegation fodder with a very weak squad
So we need someone in who knows the ropes

I think if we take 6 points from our next two games, then i think there will be anarchy from the fans demanding Shep to appoint Davey.

That's how football works Nudger, all based on football results mate, and Shep and the Board will tell the fans that the new manager as done a great job and even Sir Alec had to start out somewhere.

He showed enough tactical Knowledge on Sat for me...

He even resisted the chants for BH to come on...

I was impressed to say it was his 1st game, i'd still like a more experienced MANAGER in though and let SD coach.

I think we need an authority figure to pull the playing staff together IMHO..
