But why are they getting all the flack over this dispute. The whole tone of the news coverage has been anti BA - interviewing people who havent been given hotels etc lots of understandably pissed off passangers having a go at BA management because they cant fly them or book them into a hotel, and of course they find people who have desperate need to travel- just how can BA find 10's of thousands of hotel rooms. What I cant understand is why the BA staff walked out -can anyone explain that to me? And how Gate gourmet can say that this diruption is all BA's fault beggars belief
BA Pay the catering company, which has lost zillions of £££s, they want more, but BA won't pay em. BA Baggage handlers walked out in sympathy. If you'd booked with BA, and been left in the lurch, you'd be having a go at anything and everything BA too I should imagine!
Agree I hope BA sue the arse off Gate catering. I suspect the baggage handlers came out because they are members of the same union.
but surely the baggage handlers are ba staff you can fly without food but if the aircraft cant be loaded up correctly you cant, it might not be the ba management fault but it is a ba issue, its their staff preventing the planes from flying
RE: but surely the baggage handlers are ba staff Baggage is dealt with by the airport ,usually an independant company.Ryanair are trying to get rid of checked baggage so they dont have to pay as much in handling charges. Its the handling contractors that load the catering produce onto the planes so I reckon they have come out in support of the sacked catering staff.BA have probably renegotiated the catering contract at a reduced rate,it wouldnt surprise me if BA are Gates biggest or only customer, hence the mass redundancies to cut costs to meet BA's contract
BA (Bloody Awful) is a combination of the once great BOAC and a rabble run ailine called BEA. Trouble was BA took most of its management from BEA.
Gate Gourmet the catering company used by BA wanted to 'restructure' its workforce, which basically meant people losing their jobs. As a result, workers of the company went on unofficial strike. Gate Gourmet then sacked 600 of its workers which led to a shortage of food etc on BA flights. BA workers then went on strike in sympathy with the sacked workers. Its the usual story of a company wanting to lay people off to boost profits.
Or union members wanting money for old rope striking to protect cushy out dated overpaid working practices. Gate Gourmet wanting to introduce new working practices to reduce costs and boost efficiency but union blocking them. Another case of union narrow mindedness and stuborness in the face of progress costing people jobs and travellers holidays.
RE: Or I hardly think that processing meals for BA is very highly paid!! So, onto benefits for the old workforce & the taxpayer picking up the tab for the directors etc to have higher share dividends.
Sack 'em. Sack the lot of em. They should have some kind of clause in their contracts. And so should them poncy firemen.
RE: Or Aye, thats right. Shareholders rake in massive profits, stock price goes up and the ordinary bloke in the street is left without a job and then folk like you rip into them.
RE: Or I don't think many people are criticising the employees at Gate Gourmet for going on strike, its the baggage handlers and check-in staff who are taking illegal action which is directly impacting BA who have no say in the original dispute anyway. Not going to do Gate Gourmet staff much good if BA decide to cancel the contract as a result which they should do.
