MIKEL ARTETA came up with a bizarre excuse for his Arsenal side’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle United last night – blaming the match ball. Arsenal were beaten 2-0 as the Magpies took a giant step towards booking their place in the League Cup final ahead of the second leg on Tyneside on February 5. The Gunners wasted a number of good chances, with Jurrien Timber, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all failing to find the target with close-range headed opportunities. Arteta’s side also sent a series of long-range shots sailing over the crossbar – with the Gunners boss blaming the ball for his side’s failings. The ball used in the Carabao Cup is different to the one that is used in the Premier League, and it was clearly not to the Spaniard’s liking. Arteta said: “I think we kicked a lot of the balls over the bar, and it is clear that this ball flies a lot. We discussed that. There are things we could have done better, but in the end, that has gone. “It is just a different ball. It is very different to a Premier League ball, so you have to adapt to that because it flies different. When you touch it, your grip is very different as well. You have to adapt to that.”
Whilst I don't agree that is why they lost the game, and it was the same for both sides, why don't we have a standard ball for all competitions? We've heard this same complaint at the Euros, WC, etc., when they introduce a new ball for the competition, which behaves differently.
Does anyone else think the suspension rules are wrong in this competition? It seems harsh that if you get two bookings in the competition you miss a game when Newcastle went into the competition a round earlier than Arsenal.
