He told me that the Bournemouth chairman reckons he only spent ten million to get them into the Prem. He asked how much I thought we needed, and I said that £20 mil was a fair estimate. He said that he might be up for it, providing he can find some mates willing to put up £19 million of it, and some decent protection if the promotion windfall never materialises......!
A couple of years ago Someone bought a badge from the 1912 Cup Final on Ebay for around £800 (cant remember exactly). After a bit of detective work I contacted the seller in the hope he would send me some detailed pictures of the memorabilia. The seller said he was working on behalf of a Russian client who loved English Football and would ask his permission first. A couple of weeks later I was contacted by the owner who was very pleasant and said he was one of the people behind Zenit St Petersburg. I broached the subject of a move into English Football and even suggested renaming the club Barnsley St Petersburg FC but nothing came of it. A quick google of his name was quite alarming if I remember correctly. Gangster would be a very tame term for his activities.
Re: A couple of years ago Bournemouth made successive losses in previous seasons. 2011-12 £3.4m loss 2012-13 £13.5m loss 2013-14 £10.3m loss They were £21.5m in debt when they won promotion from the Championship. The Russian owner has put in £25m in loans at 3% interest to be paid by October 2017. If they hadn't got into the Premier League, they'd have been then next Portsmouth.
Re: A couple of years ago I'm not remotely suggesting it as a sustainable business model, and I still suspect they'll go tits up sooner rather than later!
Re: A couple of years ago Do you remember his name? I am 99% certain that I'll know someone who knows him (I always stay at least one step removed from the more dubious members of St Petersburg society!)
