Done Not a parent but the whole idea that the govenment takes such control in a sledgehammer way with no flexibility for individual circumstances is just wrong
I sit on a school governing body and have looked into the issue in depth. Schools will soon be able to determine their holiday dates which should in turn impact upon the airlines who at the moment simply hike up fares at the current scheduled holiday times. They will not be able to keep the inflated fares for an indefinite time so why not.ask your school to move the dates slightly, even 1 day can reduce prices significantly. I won't be signing the petition as I have seen the data around the impact of children being away from school. A few weeks can mean the difference between a full grade. I accept that some families holidays can be beneficial for a rounded education but I suspect a large proportion has a negative impact. My view would be to take action against the airlines through boycotts and not our educational system.
why do you just target airlines, some choose, for varied reason to holiday in this country but even then hotel's, holiday parks, etc still hike the prices to sometimes double, if a system was introduced where each child had a set number of holidays he or she could take and these had to be pre booked, i'm sure it would work far better than the current system. Also teachers didn't care about pupils educations and lost grades when they were striking last year, double standards....
Done... see MDG reply typical 'do gooder' why do people think that blanket rules fix problems... basically have we to accept the big companies ripping off the little people. I went on holiday during term time & so do my kids. It hasn't done any harm & the kids have good grades. Its like everything else as long as you are sensible you dont need the state or do gooders telling you what to do....
I have "some" sympathy but like MDG as a school Governor I understand the opportunity to learn which is lost when pupils are not in school, having said that, for primary school kids the last week of the summer of term is a bit of jolly and I would consider taking my son out of school. Secondary school is more serious IMHO, and really if you have a budget for a holiday you should plan your holiday accordingly, if it means you don't go to Turkey for 2 weeks but go to Scarborough for 2 weeks then so be it. The wording on the petition is somewhat melodramatic, don't you think? Depriving children of holidays with their family? Really?
Don't agree. It's not about holidays for kids it's about selfish parents wanting to go on holiday when it's cheaper, and bugger the kids' education. It was never a problem before foreign holidays became so prevalent. Most kids are happy playing out with their mates and not fussed about fancy holidays anyway. Not a popular view I realise, but if you really care about your kids .........
Wish someone would petition to spread school hols more evenly over the year and not have 6 weeks together. This was mooted many years ago, but never acted upon. Spare a thought also for non teaching staff who also cannot take time off during term times and are therefore forced to pay the hiked prices as well. There is no fine for them, but possibly the sack.
Way too simplistic an answer. Until quite recently my Sisters parents in law lived in the USA when my Nephews were still at infant or junior school she took them out of school once a year to take them over to see them. The cost of flying doubled in the school hols and they wouldn't have been able to afford the air fare. The school gave permission so not a problem but now that's not an option. If you really believe it's better for children aged 8 and 6 to spend an extra week in school at a quiet time and miss seeing their Grandparents and the chance to visit the USA then I think we must disagree. Once children at at senior school it's less straight forwards but even then there are times it wouldn't be a bad thing. The new rules allow no flexibility regardless of circumstance
Strange the government are against it when former Ofsted chief Sir Chris Woodhead thinks travel itself is an education - he's in favour of it!
I accept it's simplistic but I think what I said applies to the vast majority who are jibing at the new rules. I don't support the fines but think they would never got this far if the system wasn't being abused so much. One bloke I know regularly rang the local primary school from Spain to report his kid was sick when the real explanation was that he'd booked cheap flights to his villa the week before/after school holidays. The bloke has a Bentley and an Aston so it wasn't as if he couldn't afford to take his kid in the school holidays.
