Please have a read and let me know what you think. Cheers. http://www.lifesapitch.co.uk/fanzone/hill-right-to-question-relegated-clubs’-parachute-landing/
It's a very well-written article, informative, interesting and well-argued. Nice one. You even got the punctuation right and everything... One small point, I don't entirely agree with your assertion that parachute payments should not be scrapped, entirely. I think they should. 1) It's simply unfair competition 2) If they were scrapped then Premier league clubs would be forced to reconsider excessive player wages on long-term contracts. Something which has been responsible for killing the once beautiful game, in my opinion.
Well written as ever, Allen; I agree with everything except the piece on the future of "parachute" payments - they reward failure and perpetrate a "big club" Premier League, so for me they need scrapping altogether rather than just revising.
Good work. I'm actually surprised that we were one of only two clubs in the Championship to turn a profit last season. I knew that we were somewhat unusual in going down the road of frugality, but I wasn't aware that we differed from the other clubs in the division on quite that scale. Who was the other one? Blackpool?
Allen, when you say that we were one of only two clubs to make a profit last year, is that an operating profit or a profit including parachute payments? If it is the latter, that is astounding, shocking and appalling in equal measures.
Thanks everyone. Not sure who the other club was, and I think it's overall profit, I assume it includes parachute payments.
Good article that Journo. Nodding in agreement as I read it. Have to agree with the post above though, I don't think there should be any parachute payments, it should be up to the clubs to plan for relegation, they get enough money while in the PL. Maybe there should be bigger reward for promotion to the PL, but nowt for relegation?
In response to that, I actually added it in towards the end but couldn't really make my mind up. Maybe it was to slightly reduce the controversial nature of it, though I don't know why I'd do that! I guess what I meant to say/should have said was to reduce it over 2-3 years to eventually get rid of it. You live and learn. Cheers.
A good read mate Unfortunately full of logical argument and salient points so it will thus be totally ignored.
Re: A good read mate If everyone did at once it might. Unfortunately the odd person here or there won't have enough of an effect.
Go on then... How would you get every person in the country to cancel their Sky subscriptions at the same time? Or even over a year?
Re: Go on then... Also bearing in mind that not everybody gets Sky for the football, many don't even have the Sports package. Personally I do not have it at home (I can go to my Dad's to watch stuff as he has it), but I do miss the sport, the Cricket, Boxing and Darts in particular. If you want to watch any top level sport you need to have Sky Sports. So we not only need the football fans to cancel it, we need all sports fans (and movie fans, and parents who subscribe for kids) to cancel. No chance, so no change.
Re: Go on then... Spot on. I love watching cricket. All the domestic and international T20, county cricket and England are all on Sky. Also love rugby league and enjoy watching golf, darts and tennis (US Open recently for example).
Re: Go on then... Not sure I said that. But (hopefully I'm not misquoting you), it always feels contradictory to have issues with premier league dominance and yet still take out a Sky subscription. I understand that Sky show more than just premier league football, but that has always been their USP. Not trying to pick a fight, btw, just interested in your views.
