I've heard a lot of people complaining about Butterfield, pretty much since we heard he hadn't accepted his new contract offer. Most people think he's played very well this season, but a few seem to think he's turned into some sort of egotistical, archetypal footballer ever since the PL rumours began surfacing. All of a sudden, he's turned into a selfish, arrogant, and downright over-rated footballer who isn't even good enough to be playing professionally. He's had his head turned by the money of the PL and he's just a money-grabbing w**ker...apparently. I don't agree. If I was a 21 year old footballer in his position, with his ability, I would NOT be signing a new contract...yet. He might as well listen to the offers on the table and meet with the managers at other clubs before making his decision - this could be his one and only chance to move to the PL (and potential England stardom). I don't say that because I suddenly think he's ***** and over-rated, but anything could happen to him; he could get injured and never reach his potential. He could be constantly overlooked because he plays for battling Barnsley, instead of a "big" club. He could even benefit from playing with better players in training every day. In the end, he's probably the most gifted footballer we've produced in my time supporting the club. I enjoy watching a well-balanced, two-footed playmaker controlling the play - instead of watching the likes of Anthony Kay running around a lot, with no end product (except the odd red card). That's nothing against Kay, because I liked him - but Butterfield is a FAR better player than he was or ever will be. We should be happy for Jacob, and hope that he has a successful and fulfilling career. I'd love nothing more than to see OUR Jacob pulling on an England shirt and being our Xavi/Iniesta in the future. In the future, I want to say that I saw him at the beginning. Jacob, ignore all of the people who want to see you waste your career with us. You'll definitely go on to bigger things than playing for us. Just make sure you decide to leave for the right reasons, and to the right club/manager. Ignore the haters, because you can't please everyone. I think I speak for a quiet majority when I say we'd love you to stay, but we know there'll be a time when you'll outgrow us. When that time comes, good luck.
