Cameron: "Those aged between 18 and 21 who have not been in employment, education or training, known as "Neets", for six months would no longer receive Job Seekers' Allowance (JSA). Instead, they would be paid the Youth Allowance, paid at the same rate as JSA - £57.35 a week. Whilst we need a solution to the long term youth unemployed this is not it. It is simply exploiting the youth and saturates a potential jobs market with cheap labour.... However, in order to receive it they would be required to carry out 30 hours a week of mandatory community work from the first day of claiming benefits." So £57.35 divided by 30 - £1.91 per hour. 30 hours per week + travel to and from does not leave much time for job searching or attending interviews. Another Con!! So whilst the individual companies have to pay a minimum wage it is OK for the government to use the smoke screen of getting long term youth back to work to pay a pittance for what should be LA /state funded real jobs. Is this another IDS idea??
PS Confused.... .....as he also says: "However, in order to receive it they would be required to carry out 30 hours a week of mandatory community work from the first day of claiming benefits." So if it is from 1st day of claiming benefits how can you be only targeting long term youth unemployed or 'neets'?? How long before scheme extends to private companies carrying out Social work for LAs thus providing cheap labour source without need to pay minimum wage??
It's absolutely disgusting. Yet another example of the ageist society we live in where pensioners are exempt from means testing for the winter fuel allowance and we set our young people to work for less than £2 an hour on the stuff we usually use as a deterrent for criminals.
And yet idiots, the selfish and the greedy will vote for the Tories in their droves come election time, which unfortunately is a large proportion of voters. I despair.
For 18-20 year olds its £5:13 and for 21 year olds its £6:50 However and something I hadnt realised - the first year of an apprenticeship is only £2:93 so I can imagine some employers taking on apprentices for a year and then letting them all go and getting another set For the record I have no problem in principle with making the unemployed work for their benefits as long as its doing something worthwhile and not providing a cheap source of labour preventing people doing it as a proper job This sounds more like a ruse to get them to drop out of the unemployment figures Where I live the cheapest monthly bus ticket works out at £17 per week so if you have only £40 left for doing 30 hours work whilst trying to find a real job a lot are just going to not bother signing on
Makes me fkn sick. And to think that 55% of my countrymen voted NO to be better together. I only hope that most of those NO voters are now suffering and paying for believing the lies which was served to them. SNP landslide at the election and hopefully arses at Westminster will be kicked. This tyranny cannot be allowed to continue.
I don't think that this will happen, because it will be too expensive to provide instructors, or group leaders. Then there are also the requirements of H&S.
This is what happens when human beings are replaced by an increasingly mechanized workforce, in the name of increased profit margins. Machines are more reliable, they don't need toilet breaks, they don't need holidays and they don't get sick. This is of course a good thing, as long as replacement jobs can be made available to those people who screwed tops on bottles, went down mines, worked in offices, etc.. etc.. Unfortunately those jobs haven't been replaced. Those without work are now labelled as 'scroungers' and 'neets by the same politicians closely associated with big business, who laid them off in the first place. Sure, there's always people who will play the system, but its been neatly packaged as if anyone unemployed is to blame. None of the political parties will tackle this issue. Until they do, voting wont make a jot of difference - and its only going to get worse. Edit: Note this graphic for America. Look what the most common job is in 2014. Now think about automated transport. Who will need truck drivers? http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2015/02/05/382664837/map-the-most-common-job-in-every-state
Yes, as have and will I, but by the time I'm a pensioner there'll be no state pension for me, and I'll not have had any family allowance for my children and will have to pay for their University places as well. Cameron is of the generation who've had everything for free and expect to continue while at the same time giving the next generation nothing.
Looks like someone in Government reads the BBS... http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showth...-sector-council-workers&p=1611331#post1611331
Why not , instead of them paying it back and walking away scott free , have rich tax dodgers do work in the community at minimum wage until their debt is paid back ? For some reason I can't see that happening
But wouldn't you have been bankrupt had you said yes...... http://www.heraldscotland.com/polit...t-if-it-had-voted-for-independence.1423582718 If not bankrupt you'd have at least been another skint European country alongside the likes of Spain and Greece. You should count your blessings folks said no
Sorry but I have to disagree. Looks like we will never know how everything would have worked out but Lord Faulkes who was a mouthpiece for the NO campaign is obviously gonna milk this. The truth is Scotland's economy atm is based on the financing of Trident and all the other expences which go along with it. Those expences would have been got rid of and monies redirected to finance other more important socially accepted projects such as Health, Education, Employment and Housing. I agree that the expected oil revenue has dropped but the oil is still there and the price won't stay low forever.
I think you actually ought to do some community work when on the dole, there's always some litter that needs picking up and fences needing painting. However 30 hours does seem ridiculously excessive. Also unsure why this would be restricted to young people, they're the people finding it hardest to get a job at the minute why is it them being punished again?
if they are working for free in a full time job when and how are they supposed to apply for a proper job? What happens to all those currently employed doing the 'work@ outlined for these people are they made unemployed. Other than that a cracking idea...
Really? So those youngsters told to pick litter up will then make our roadsweepers unemployed. Oh and we won't need the talents of painters. Don't think you have thought this through mate. Let's be honest here. This government wants the labour force in GB as nothing but slaves. Give the youngsters a real job and real apprenticeships and a sense of pride. This will just dishearten them even more.
I'm unclear about this ,will they be working with the convicted crims on Community Reperation Orders just wearing different jackets. Also with the alleged introduction of compulsary treatment for drug addicts and the obese who are on benefits you wouldn't want to be a fat lad under 21 with a drug problem . By the time you've done your 30 hrs ,been to the gym and detox session you won't have much time to fill in applications which mean you'll lose your benefit anyway
