I hope Brian May doesn't read this forum, this news could cause his ball-bag to drop off....

I read that a couple of months ago, not sure I liked it, but it was a big thing in it's day, it was one of the first novels to be written 'normaly'rather than in overblown Victorian style (cf. Charles Dickens).

I'm sure he's a great author, but his dialogue writing in that book was poor.

The Old Man and The Sea is a great little novel. I read it sat on the terrace of the Hotel Nacional in Havana with a Cuba Libre

    I've never read his works

But have wanted to know whether his reputation is warranted.

So long as you're near a sea I'm sure it'll have the desired atmospheric effect. I love reading books on holiday. They just seem better for some reason

    Me too

Reading a good book on holiday, whilst drinking a glass of cold wine/cider/beer, is my idea of relaxation.

Absolutely. I've read a few of his over the last couple of years since I read that but none I've enjoyed more. I also enjoyed his short stories a lot. As Rosco says, though, I didn't really get on with A Farewell To Arms.
