New rules about the use of the whip.

Perhaps they should protest by whipping each other to show that it doesn't hurt!

I think it used to be using the whip 12 times in a race you received a caution 13 times a ban and now its 7 is allowable with no more than 5 in the last furlong.

Jump racing 8 times no more than 5 times from last fence.

Every horse gets inspected after a race to see if its been marked by the Jockey using the whip, something like 200 horses from over 13,000 inspections were shown to have been marked last year. They should do away with how many times you use your whip and just ban any jockey for a month if they mark the horse.

    or maybe just ban whips!

bit radical and im not a namby pamby animal lover by any means... in fact im all in favour if the rules state it, that id rather see a jockey use his whip to get his horse over the line if thats what it takes however...

if all the jockeys had no whip at all surely thats a level playing field and the best horse/jockey/ground combination wins....

Re: or maybe just ban whips!

Sometimes they need the whip to control unruly horses from when they get on them to dismounting them.

But like yourself I can see both sides.

They do have races where apprentice jockeys can only use hands and heels but these are usually races with old handicap horses that know the score and know the raceday routine.

Problem is, when a horse starts "hanging" or worse veering off, the whips pretty much all you'v got, and already someone's being banned for using his whip just to stop the horse from crashing into others, stupid, stupid rule.

Pointless if you ask me; this new rule about use of the whip has been planned for a while. The Jockeys need to get real and stop making excuses about how they must use the whip. If it didn't hurt the horse it would be ineffective surely and hitting an animal in the name of sport has to be wrong.
