So Roy Jones ignored what he had to do to be considered a so called great. Said it before but fighting someone 10 years too late proves nothing, Look at his record he lost to Glen Johnson, the man Clinton Woods beat to land the title. His recent record is nothing special. And with that isn’t going to do what he wants to do and prove himself to the USA. I had old man Hopkins a winner against Calzaghe. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article4092697.ece http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=001758&cat=boxer Do what you need to prove yourself Joe and take on Pavlik. Not a way past it boxer in it for the money. As Bob Arum says you will make more money by taking on Pavlik. But then again he wants to beat a name rather than someone capable of handing him a beating.
Hopkins a winner? Calzaghe was poor that night but still beat Hopkins, who should have known after 20 years in Boxing that to win fights you have to throw punches that land, or at least act in a way that looks slightly offensive. Poor decision by Joe to take this fight I agree, but for the first time I actually think he might lose. Jones has better hand speed than Hopkins, more power, and a better reach (I think) which could mean he keeps out of JC's way for the majority of the fight landing punches from distance, forcing JC to walk in to some of Jones' bombs. On the other hand, if things don't go Roy Jones' way for the first 3 or 4 rounds, he hasn't got the heart to turn it around and JC will grow in confidence and potentially take the win. One things for sure it'll be a far better fight than the Hopkins one. I'm more bothered about Ricky Hatton deciding to fight in Las Vegas as it's cheaper for the fans! What's cheaper for the fans would be to fight in England. Unifying the titles in front of a packed Wembley stadium is what he should have been organising. He'll beat Mallignaggi within 6 rounds, hopefully I'll be there to see it.
I’m going to try for tickets for HAttons New York Fight against Mallignaggi. I went to Vegas for the Castillo fight and wanted to try for the Mayweather fight but I didn’t have the cash to go. Living in Manchester I used to go to the MEN to see him and it’s a shame that he will not be boxing in Manchester again. Hopkings though was at 42 years old way past it and didn’t have to stamina, I’ve no doubt that Hopkins would have knocked him out 5 years ago when he was just coming to the end of his peak. Like you say, I think Jones hand speed and power will be the difference. With slaps, Joe won’t knock him out so I still would say that Jones. If he motivates himself the right way and shows he still wants one last big fight, then he will take out JC in 5.
Hattons fighting in Vegas mate not New York. His dad came out a few days ago and said they searched the internet for flights and hotels to New York and it proved £00-£300 more expensive than Vegas, so as reward to the fans they're fighting in Vegas, and would would you believe it, they reckon the MGM again - not a good move, fighting in the only ring you've been knocked out in! Went to Vegas for the Mayweather fight, but only watched it in the theatre on the CCTV. Went to a couple of his fights early doors, hopefully be out there for Mallignaggi as it should be a cracker. I'm worried about it all going to Calzaghe's head, why promote yourself for your last ever fight and give yourself the extra pressure? Let Frank Warren do it all while you carry on doing what you've done best for the last 44 fights, prepare to win yet another fight. Will check the odds nearer the time on a Jones/Hatton double.
Jones a winner ... I don't think Jones has a snowballs chance in hell of beating Calzaghe. Shame not to see the Pavlik fight though ...
Mmm, a 42 year old past it boxer recently would have knocked out JC with a bit more stamina. A revitalised Jones in maybe in his last big fight will be too much for him. Too much class, speed and power even at 39 to what JC will have come up against.
