JOEY Barton has launched an astonishing attack on Paul Gascoigne's rehab bid today.

The QPR bad boy today hit out at England football stars who have pledged to save the stricken legend in a foul-mouthed Twitter tirade.

A star-studded line-up of footballers is rallying round alcoholic Gazza, 45, as he battles his demons.

He faces a £100,000 bill after being rushed into intensive care in the US — and could be in rehab for months.

Last night Arsenal’s Wilshere and Chelsea’s John Terry backed our call for pals to help cover Gazza’s spiralling US medical expenses.

Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard had already chipped in, along with former internationals Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer — and The Sun donated £5,000.

But in a series of foul mouthed tweets, Barton slammed the move - calling the footie stars "blood sucking leeches".

Twitter users rounded on Barton after the rant.

US TV host Piers Morgan said: "You're sounding pathetic now. I hope you never need the kind of help Gazza needs."

Stephen Hickey wrote: "Not surprised to see joey Barton is giving his two penny's worth on the gazza situation always goes too far#motormouth."

Alex Beale tweeted: "Joey Barton needs to look at himself first. He'll tweet anything so people don't forget who he is."

Gazza has run up a £100,000 bill after being rushed into intensive care in the US within days of starting rehab.

Friends have said when he leaves he faces MONTHS in a £7,500-a-week Arizona clinic but has frittered away almost all of his own cash.

    Hmmmm. . . . .

That article seems a tad (an understatement) biased.

What, you mean instead of just the few words that the gutter press have used to create a story out of? I'm no fan of the guy but I've got to agree here the media reporting of this bears little or no resemblance to the argument he's trying to put forward.

I'm on the side of Barton here as he's absolutely right. Only the alcoholic can help the alcoholic. If he's not willing to help himself nobody else can help him. He's lucky that even though he's lost millions he's still got people around who's willing to use their cash to help him. Although these people could have donated to him without it being known to everyone as it does look shifty.

Absolutely agree. He's completely right in everything he says, there is a backlash because he has shown the media up for what they are and they are retaliating. There is a lot more to Barton than just the hoodlum he's made out to be, he has an interesting insight to a lot of subjects. If anything I think he held back, my opinion is that a lot of the Danny Bakers and Chris Evans contributed massively to putting Gascoigne where he is now. Taking him out on the pIss on the eve of the 98 World Cup cup and causing him to be dropped? Who was watching his back then? You can argue that he is a grown man capable of looking after himself, but he quite evidently isn't. And the Sun donating 5k? How generous, that more than redresses the balance for all those papers they sold on the back of Paul Gascoigne.

Is it only me though who hears a French accent when reading Barton's tweet's?

I'm torn on this one. No doubt Gazza can only get through this by himself and only if he really wants to fight it. However, if the press reports are owt to go by he's pretty much at rock bottom. I would hope that if I were in a similar predicament there would be people who cared enough to give me a helping hand. I'm not sure ex team mates / footballers are in it for the good publicity. It's the equivalent of us throwing loose change into a collection bucket. He's your hero, you've got money to burn....why wouldn't you contribute.

Perhaps Piers Morgan in an exception as he is a notorious PR slave. I loathe the man but for Joey Barton to accuse him of courting publicity is hypocrisy to the extreme.

Why did their contributions have to be made public so it gives those that did some nice publicity out of something bad happening to someone? Could they not have kept their donations quiet?

I suppose they could. But it was a public campaign, led by a national newspaper. Footballers are interviewed on a daily basis and Gascoigne will be a popular topic of conversation (he was mentioned numerous times at the Hignett evening at the Lamproom) Some will probably have been asked directly if they will be supporting it. I suspect their hearts in the right place and their view is the same as all of us...we hope he sorts himself out.

I used to think there was more to Joey Barton than the arrogant, pretentious yob he is often portrayed as. Then I followed him on twitter and realised he's an utter bell end.

Joey Barton is a complete fcukwit.

One minute reading his twitter timeline told me that, a couple of years ago. I do not take his views on board about any subject. I find it bizarre that some do, but each to their own.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day

Just because he's a nob doesn't mean he's wrong ALL the time.

True. I suppose Hitler, Genghis Kahn and Steve Claridge said the odd sensible thing, once.

Contrary for the sake of being contrary. His fcukwittery automatically nullifies any reasonable points he makes.

I appreciate it's difficult to take each argument on its own merits in face of overwhelming evidence that the person putting it forward needs a good slap but that's exactly the principle on which this very board relies.

Re: Even a stopped clock is right twice a day

slightly off-topic -- why does Gazza have to go to the USA for treatment?
And where have Lineker, Evans et al been for the past 20 years as this guy has been on the path to self-destruction.
