Gets more and more interesting with every new extract Barnsley Chronicle prints. Really interesting views by John on why Neil Redfearn ended up leaving us and how their relationship is to this day. I'll be buying a copy when it's out next week
http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/John-Dennis-The-Oakwell-Years/p/3451/ For those who didn't see the Chronicle he said Neil got the same agent Gazza had and he asked for a new contract in February of our premiership season for his client. Both sides were way out on what was on offer. The agent wanted us to make sure that Neil was always the highest paid player. Dennis told him to wait until the end of the season about a new contract so it didn't put Neil off the relegation fight we were in. He listened eventually and he went to talk to him in London at start of May for a one on one chat. He got there and Neil was there with his wife and the agent made it obvious other clubs were interested. John did say to this day he's still a good relationship with Redders and the contract speculation didn't affect his relationship with anyone or his performances on the field. I know for a fact Neil's wife hates football so not sure why she had to be in on contract talks.
Hmm, that or maintaining his Prem wage if we got relegated -(which I'm led to believe was what was in the contracts of the foreign players we signed) - which may well have made him the highest wage earner? Does John Dennis touch on the reasoning behind how they sold season tickets for the Premier League Season or the thinking behind the contracts awarded to Tinkler and Hristov for example ?
Always 2 sides to a story. Anyone read Redfearns book, completely different angle to it. He said he had to leave has he was not being offered the same as the Johnny Foreigners come through the door. The likes of Marksted and Krizan were on double what the skipper and most influential member of the team was on. Who to believe? But think Dennis' book will be well worth a purchase.
I thought his wife worked for a football club (donny?) And did account related stuff. Ideal person to sit in on cpntract talks affecting herself id have thought
Once asked her in Holmfirth when they were out with their kids who were young at the time if she liked football and she said she can't stand it. Maybe she did work for a footie club but she can't have had passion for her role if she didn't like the sport.
