as a player he was great, as a manager then the only great thing he did was sign hignett the legend from Aberdeen
when SUPE JOHN was appointed I was gutted for him he was one of my all time Oakwell heroes and still is, they tarnished his legendary status a little by making him manager. The tarnish for me is long gone and SUPER JOHN is still on my hero list. Met him a couple of times, read his book...top bloke.
Re: when SUPE JOHN was appointed I was gutted for him Top player and top bloke indeed, but rubbish manager - managed to get a team of (admittedly lower) Premier League players to 17th in the second tier, and signed Mike Sheron on a 4 year contract. Nuff said!
Re: when SUPE JOHN was appointed I was gutted for him I think Sheron was another self opinionated "Billy Big Bollax" he had been, and I accent the ' HAS BEEN' top goal scorer. I still think he came to us with a chip on his shoulder, when he failed he then over tried and fell flat. But my point was that a guy like SUPER JOHN should not have ever been appointed, Wilson was poached and the Board at the time wanted to appease the fans in their anger, to me thats why he was put in place. No fan was gonna bad mouth him as he was a legend for us in our prem promotion and his gutsy playing in our prem season.
