just this: http://www.mysporttoday.co.uk/ViewA...de=sheffuntd&SectionID=4853&ArticleID=3582596 brings back some memories. shame we wont sell out this year.
Didn't go to the game I was at Uni at the time and although I had a season ticket, I couldn't afford to go to many away games (nothing changes). I was driving over the M62 to Manchester from Bradford listening to Radio 5 when they announced Hendrie had scored. Hands off the steering wheel, cheering like a madman and the car careered across all three lanes of the motorway.
I remember it like yesterday the best atmosphere at a game Ive ever been to. we had proper fans in them days.
Aftermath Driving thro' Sheff and seeing Tarn fans giving it large all over.
Slightly pissed that night.
We had a more genuine, down to earth fanbase. Before folk were poisoned by the internet.

What a game that was to attend, I can clearly visualise that goal as well and then the away end going mental. Sat on the coach after waiting to come back to Barnsley seeing those sad Sheff Utd faces, and then going out round town after with some Barnsley supporting mates who hadn't been to the game.
I'm same Thrappo, 11 years ago is clearer than the last 12 hours. I was only 8 though. Remember it being packed on the bus though, and my dad nearly throwing me over the upper tier when we scored.
As much as I enjoyed that season (who wouldn't, being a 11/12 year old lad going to every game home and away!)....I wonder where we would've been now had we not gone up that year.
The knock-on effect of getting relegated fecked us over for a good few years, and I reckon we're only just recovering

You've got a short memory "They dunt ******* wanna go up" cried 50% of the pre '97 Barnsley fan base.
The best we could have hoped for now had we not gone up that season, would be top half of the championship. Which is pretty much where we are. The best thing that ever happened to this club was promotion to the premiership. The promotion season and the year in the top flight were absolutely ******* brilliant. Just superb. Anyone who thinks different is just a mawngy old b.astard.
It was a cracking season I loved seeing all the big clubs facing us, and especially winning at Anfield...I'll never forget that.
But it created a different mentality amongst a lot of our fans, and somehow it didn't seem the same after, our small friendly club mentality seemed to vanish, and gradually everyone at the club became less and less friendly (me and my Dad used to meet the players before the game to get autographs and pictures etc) that all changed afterwards.
I wouldn't have changed what happened in that sense, but some better decisions could've been made afterwards that might have saved us from 6/7 years of utter ****

Promotion season very much so personally, the year in the Prem soured my thoughts towards football a bit. Seeing the 'gamesmanship' that went on esp v Liverpool, Man Utd etc from some of England's biggest names and in particular the events at the home game v Liverpool which killed us off took away some of the excitement I felt.
Got it back a bit in the Wembley season and in Ritchie's promotion year, but it's been a slog. Of course what's happened to BFC on and off the pitch in the intervening years hasn't helped.
But then again I've been a miserable old fcker since I was 10.

RE: I remember the Aftermath Sheff Utd fans are always up for it, Had one try to get on our bus at the cup game when Machin was in charge. Not a pleasant area.
