Bit OTT saying he had a nightmare, lost Aguero for last goal and other goal ball was out before sterling crossed.

Excellent player but if you want someone to get (rated) 8 every week not 9s and the odd 6 then go for a Shackell type.

Wasn't he playing at right back again , a position that never really suited him at the top level, maybe Martinez doesnt want to sell him, transfer window closes and he goes back to centre half

One of the best players in the Premiership suddenly begins playing poorly and loses his confidence..........during the transfer window

    I wonder why?

Had a really poor game at the weekend playing centre half, gave away a penalty as well.

He's the victim of being a genuinely top class footballing centre half but at a team managed by the most defensively incapable manager I have ever seen. He has outgrown his managers capability and needs to be coached on at a higher level.

People who have a go at stones for trying to 'play' too much and suggest he needs to learn when to just clear his lines ought to realise that it is Mr Martinez dictating the style as well as not have wide midfield players cover his full backs, and has Gareth Barry ten or twenty yards further forward from where he can be most effective as a tidy upper. (He still does ok, always finds a pass to be fair).

Of all the premier league managers I think he's the most obvious to be pinching a living. Look nice going forward on occasion but they don't win anything like the number of games they should with the ingredients they have.

Can't agree with any of that. Everton are by far my favourite team Premier League team to watch. Barry has been excellent for much of this season, and its his stability that allows Barkley his freedom, the wingers theirs, and both full backs to push on. I'd be quite happy to see Stones play out from the back. The vast majority of the time he keeps possession for his team which is the best form of defence. Stones is still incredibly young for a centre half and as such is going to make occasional errors. What won't make him a better player is everyone getting edgy when he makes a few mistakes and trying to get him to change the very thing that sets him apart.

Well opinions and all that - but for me if you have the best young centre half in the country, two of the most effective full backs, one of the better defensive midfield players of the last decade, possibly the best midfield talent the country has produced in a long time and a £28million beast of a centre forward, you should win a lot more than 18 of the last 61 league games

Yes the ball was out of play but he was still at fault for more than one goal for the second match running. Not helped playing for an underachieving side with an overated manager, but when he's in his own penalty area he shouldn't be trying to be a ball player. There is a time and a place for that and that's further up the field. If one of our defenders did that it would annoy us as much as the Everton fans that lately have got on his back.

I've read all the comments on here, some positive, some negative, some as usual away with the fairies.

My opinion, for what it's worth:

John Stones is technically an excellent player.

He seems to have all the attributes required; ball skills, desire, commitment and common sense.

He seems to be down to earth, proud to be from Barnsley and keen to put something back into the community, be it local to Barnsley or wherever he is plying his trade as a professional footballer.

No doubt his head is being turned somewhat by all the media hype saying he is a prospective England captain and that there is interest from Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man City, Man United et al.

But he is only 21; at the risk of sounding old (and I probably am, as John was born on my Dad's 76th birthday) he potentially has the world at his feet and I for one hopes that he ignores all the media hype and the criticism when he has the odd bad game; he just shrugs it off and gets on with playing football, which I believe is what he truly loves doing.

Keep on doing what you are doing John, enjoy it, ignore the hype and the negative comments. Don't believe in your own publilcity, just be yourself and you will continue to be a great ambassador for yourself, your family, your town, your club, your country and the game of football.

To be fair he has a 43% win percentage. He took them to 5th in the league in his first season. Second season struggled in the league with a small squad due to the pressures of the Europa League but how many teams does that happen to? This season they've been desperately unlucky in loads of games I've seen them, players not taking chances (not really the managers fault), injuries to key players Besic and McCarthy, and individual errors (particularly Howard who seems past it). They let in goals but then they go for it in games and commit men forward. Isn't that what most Barnsley fans keep asking for?

They're a young team, and those young players will make mistakes but I think they're building something pretty special if they can hold on to people and give the youngsters time to develop. He's brought in some fantastic talent in Besic, McCarthy, Lukaku and Deulofu and clearly has the ability to significantly improve players.

He'll look like a Rolls Royce once he signs for a decent team.
