"There has been a shift in culture from what they are used to. They're now seeing these TECHNICAL, gifted, quick footed little players who dart around and get a lot of the ball instead of getting the ball into the box everytime they get it".

I'm not seeing this. I agree that we don't get the ball into the box everytime which I see as a weakness while the manager regards it as a positive, which is concerning. He's doing the v-neck manager trick of trying to tell people that pointless six yard square and backwards passing is technical when it is not remotely so. It's almost as if getting the ball forward with pace is the Neanderthal approach and anyone who wants to play on this manner is a footballing dinosaur.

It's clear that the current style fits in with Johnson's self styled intellectual approach. Boring times ahead at Oakwell.

So he reckons that getting the ball into the box is a bad thing and Ben Pearson seeing a lot of the ball in the centre circle is better? If so then it is clear that his intentions at Barnsley are just as I suspected, to achieve 46 nil nil draws

Why put the ball in the box if only Winnall is in there? Lets just give them possession back to them

There is a pretty obvious solution to that though isn't there

You can't have too many players getting forward. It's not technical enough. It's an old fashioned approach which harks back to a time when football was good to watch.

Seems away with the fairies sometimes. Needs to read some Brian Clough quotes

    image.jpg

People want a team to get players into attacking positions. You don't win matches by playing 456789 square passes after all. People were annoyed by him taking Winnall off because they wanted an attacking addition not replacement.

"Tomorrow's opponents Gillingham had a similar 2014/15 season to Barnsley in that they brought in a new manager, Justin Edinburgh, halfway through the campaign"

Johnson: "...it’s another classic case of a group that’s been together for a while and knows each other’s individual games"

Right. Something doesn't add up to me there.

    I particularly like the quote,

"It depends what you're after when you come to watch a game"

Bit of entertainment would be hovering around the top of that list.

always worries me a bit when managers start hinting that the fans are thick, somebody ought to point out to him if the ball doesn't enter the box it can't get into the net.
Its not as if we have been brought up watching hoofers, we have a tradition of playing football the right way but technically good stuff only gets you so far you need a bit of individual falir and whats that other thing,....oh aye attempts at goal!

Oh yes look at the 0-0 draws we've had so far this season. A grand total of zilch. What happened to giving a manager time? He has admitted we've been poor in some games but if we were playing fluid, attacking football by the end of September LJ would be a miracle worker not a manager.

Players win you games but they won't if there told to tap it about in their own half of the field.
Players also get managers the sack!!!

So he`s introducing us to some new kind of football is he, err KHiller were trying this 4 seasons ago. As for the players well aint seen much to get me annoyed abart certain individuals mebbies Wilkinson or Lewin but he`s been played art of position most of the time. So if I cant fault the players then it must be whats being asked of them from the head coach.

You wanted youth, so lets not use it as an excuse when things aren`t going great.

    What did Cloughie know?

Sure, he won a league title and two European cups playing some of the best football this country has ever seen, but he didn't have a v-neck or a coaching badge did he?

Interesting comment about Hill. At first under him football was played similarly to now, but once he got it right we were excellent and great to watch such as in in against Doncaster, Leeds twice, Crystal Palace, then Birmingham, Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Charlton the following season

If we can end up playing in a similar vein later in the season this forum will be a much happier place

When played well and with pace and movement it looks good when the pace and movement aren`t there it as boring as ****.

He would also need a plan B then for when we lose our loans or when teams work us out and change tack against us.

Don't know how I forgot that as I went to the match but still 1 0-0 draw isn't exactly bad. We've had a 5-3, 4-1, 3-2, 3-1 and a couple of 2-1's. To say how negative and boring we are playing there's been a lot of goals.

The majority of League 1 games are very boring, if you're after entertainment week in week out you're not watching the right league.

As you know I'm fully behind the manager, as always, probably labelled as a happy clapper on here BUT I am becoming a little concerned about what LJ says he sees in comparison to what I see. I'm all for honesty rather than hoodwinking. Maybe time for me to stop listening/reading his interviews like I did under Hill and Flicker.
