Excellent player. First class touch, holds the ball up well and brings players into the thick of the action. And he's good in the air. However... I personally feel he is too similar a PLAYER (not skill wise, but effectiveness and general presence wise) to Ferenczi. Two players who are good at holding the ball up (well, Ferenczi has been off boil the past few games - he needs to find the workrate he had last season) and bringing others into the game. This is not what we need. For me, Macken and someone with quick feet and an eye for goal eg Cureton, Earnshaw even Nardiello :O Just my two cents, but the fact is - we aren't scoring enough. Macken is a class act, but without someone to work with who CAN find the net and ISNT afraid to shoot, we are going to struggle in on the front line if the goals dry up from midfield.
RE: Macken & Mostto Agree. I said that when he first came. Another one I'd consider looking at (although a long shot) would be Macken as a lone gunman, and either Campbell-Ryce and Howard or Campbell-Ryce and Da Silva playing just off him like inside strikers. (In the hole type). Or maybe just Campbell-Ryce playing off him? Just a thought.
Last night he was fantastic Right from the off he was darting around, closing players down, and all throughout his touch was immense. I agree though, his touch is being wasted playing with Ferenczi. I like Stan, but at the moment Macken is playing well and he needs someone else to feed off.
Thats just what my dad said. I thought Macken was class again, but I did he keep going to right back?
Macken And Ferenczi Cannot Play Together All it results in his long ball crap to two similar players and we aren't going to score many with them two up front. Worryingly the back up aren't too good either. Kim looked good when he came on though and looked to impress.
Not so sure
I don't think Macken and Stan play well as a pair (not at the moment anyway). I would definitely pair Macken with Christiansen for a while- at least till xmas should both stay fit.
Stan was woeful last night.

RE: Not so sure Pure speculation but I assume there's a reason why Ferenczi is preferred to Christiansen and Mosstto and thats because hes better...
As a pairing Macken & Ferenczi are the best we've had in a while. Last night I didn't think either had a particularly good game - Macken towed his bag out mind.
At the moment there's no doubt Macken and Stan are our best front 2, particularly away from home when you need to hold the ball up and track back to help out, but I'm hopeful that once Mostto has 'aclimatised', that he would benefit from playing alongside Macken cos he's more likely to make a run past the defender and feed off a decent through ball. Christensen is a decent option to have on the bench, impact player perhaps but I dont see him starting many games this season, he doesnt seem to have the close control or finesse from what I've seen. Odejayi is low on confidence and not helped by the fact a contingent of fans have already written him off.
RE: As a pairing They might well be, but the fact of the matter is this. We are creating FAR FAR too many chances, and not sticking them away. Watford on Saturday - could have and should have been 5 with ease. Sheffield Wednesday last night - should have had at least 1, and that's being lenient. Wolves last week - should have got at least a point. We aren't scoring enough. FACT. Goalscoring striker needed, neither Macken or Ferenczi are out and out goalscorers. They are 10 a season men at best. But their contributions to the rest of the team are massive...but goals is what we need.
Whichever the personnel selected It's certainly a disappointing goalscoring return from the strikers overall when appraised against the amount of money the club have supplied for investment.
Wolves spent a lot more than us on Eastwood alone and only scored 18 goals. Mostto needs time, Odejayi has jumped 2 divisions, Stan's not doing bad, but regardless, dont think any of them will score 20 goals, but who cares if we finish 12th or better. Howard's penalty taker an all remember.
2nd Half, Macken kept turning to his left Sheron style and the CH just stood waiting and took the ball off him.
Summed up a very frustrating night.

RE: 2nd Half, That happened twice in 90 minutes, the rest of the time he turned away and found a team mate.
RE: 2nd Half, It was when he had back to goal with a defender on him, happend 5 or 6 times in 2nd half.
First half he was quality and it didnt happen once.

John Macken is not exactly a 'Goal Machine' Although I agree he tries hard and can hold up a ball better than most players we have, but, his record of scoring goals in the past is poor. So why do we expect it to dramatically improve? If we have to dig into the reserves and buy a 'successful' striker we should do so, not hope we can sign a loanee that has a poor strike record. (doh) (doh)
RE: John Macken is not exactly a 'Goal Machine' I don't, that wasn't the point of my post. The point was, although Ferenczi and Macken are good hold up players and good team players. We DO NEED someone who can get 15-20 goals a season. With the likes of Macken, Ferenczi pitching in with around 10.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think he's scored 10 goals In the last 3 seasons. Admitted he is a trier and puts himself about, but we need at this moment in time a little more than that.We need a 'goal scorer'
