I've slagged him off before so I think it's only fair to say I thought he was excellent today.

Totally agree, he seems to have been overlooked because we all drooling over Nwakali, both were superb today

Scored the same amount of goals in 15 games (4) that Connell has in his last 70+ just in case anyone was surprised with the starting line up.

We need goals from midfield and he gives us that.

They're completely different types of midfielder, so the comparison is pointless. Against certain teams Nwakali and Russell would get overrun but in games where the back 4 don't need as much shielding they look as if they might form a good pair.

Dont really care which one of them scores them as long as they keep working hard together mate. Connell does all the hard yards and unloved stuff, but Russell looks classy on the ball. Just wish he was more mobile defensively because then we'd have a really gem

He had a great game, he and Nkwali were the big difference between the teams

He’s had many more good games than bad games this season. Technically he’s excellent.

Have to admit I said last year that I couldn't believe he was making a living playing football. Just couldn't see anything in him. Glad he's proved me wrong (he's not the first).

He’s turning into the player we all thought he was going to be.

Well he is not turning in to the player I think he could be. Any player that has to pause for a breather when he as dribbled for 15 yds aint for me. Currently we need to play him for team balance but I would looking to replace him asap.

Credit to Clarke for playing him further up the pitch to get the very best out of him.

Indeed. Certainly suits him more than sitting deep in the midfield.

Not sure why it’s taken this long to do that in all honesty as he’s clearly excellent on the ball but does sometimes get bypassed when running back towards our goal. I guess Kane leaving has helped Russell.

    It's called conserving energy.

I'll never understand why skilled players who only run when it makes sense are constantly berated by our fans, yet players who chase the ball for 90 minutes without doing anything get praised as heroes.

    Makes no sense.

I think this is the real point. Today against very poor opposition we looked excellent going forward and that had a lot to do with some quality football from those who started in midfield. However, without wanting to piss on anyones chips, against most teams (even the general rubbish in this Division) it would have been our starting midfield that would often be overpowered. We wouldn’t normally get the time or space to operate as we did today.
Having said all that, as a fan, you really want to see Nwakali in the team. The quality that lad possesses is something we haven’t had for a very long time. He’s a joy to watch.

Totally agree, a mate of mine who's an Huddersfield fan said his best season under Coberan was playing on the half turn further up the pitch.

His main problem is he can't run. He was clean through with 5 yards start and was caught up by the defender. If he loses the ball in midfield he makes no effort to win the ball back. I think that's why Clarke has started to play him further forward.

I think Nwakali would be great in Russell's position which is a nice problem to have.

Shows how bloody idiotic Collins was to play him deeper with more defensive responsibility.

There was always a player there but he still runs back towards his own goal like he’s stuck in treacle.

In the opposing half he’s a strong runner with the ball
