So would I - in fact I would probably rather have kept Harewood. Donaldson might be interesting but as he is still under contract and we would have to pay for him I cant see that happening - if we are paying for a player I would rather it be O'Grady. Hopefully someone has fed some disinformation to the Star so that Jones can see we have other options and if he sticks out for silly money he will be paying O'grady not to play next season
That's exactly what I was thinking. If it looks like we're in for other players then Jones can't hold us to ransom. He obviously wants to get rid of O'Grady and if it looks like we're not really that desperate for him at all, he may drop the price. I remember a similar thing happening with JCR. I think we had a £250,000 bid rejected so didn't bother. We then went back on deadline day and offered £175,000 which Southend accepted, just because it looked like they weren't going to get any fee for him otherwise.
No he won't because after how he played for us Jones will be having many clubs enquiring about him so if we don't buy him he will be sold easily elsewhere anyway. As for Stead and Donaldson well i'm in the camp of wishing we'd kept Marlon if we are after Stead who's proved time and time again he's not a championship proven scorer. I'd rather Donaldson was given a chance to make the step up then give Stead more time to go through a championship season struggling to reach double figures.
I'm not convinced they will, not from the Championship anyway. He had a good 4 months for us scoring 6 goals. If he's still considered not good enough for Wednesday (who will have tracked his progress more closely than anyone) then I can't see many clubs willing to take a risk. I can't see them stumping up more money than we would. I'd be quite happy with Donaldson though, he's looked a good player whenever I've seen him. Similar in many respects to O'Grady.
not if cog only wants to come to us, he could say no to any other offer and its Barnsley or Wednesday then what can Jones do ? the decks stacked in our favour for a change on this one
Clayton Donaldson would be a cracking signing. Seen him play a few times for Brentford this season and his ability of finding space to get a shot in is quality, a bit like Jason Scotland. He would score goals for us. With Jon Stead, I'm getting the impression he is a squad player at this level even though I haven't seen him play for a while, except when he ripped us to shreds this season at Ashton Gate.
If COG would only sign for us Dave Jones seems the type would simply let him rot in the reserves rather than sell him to one of their local rivals for a fee he's not happy with.
I am unsure about Stead. He was mustard against us at Bristol, but seems to have blown hot and cold throughout the season. Superb skills both in creating and scoring, but would he fit the mould of high work-rate which Flicker wants? Donaldson is a closer fit, but I wish we were talking about central defenders and my first signings would be Cranie and Steele, along with making sure Mellis stays a good while.
Definitely looks like Flicker really wants a target man, Stead, Donaldson and Higdon all fit the bill.
