We ought to be careful about mocking other clubs on this issue. After all, we signed Garry O'Connor - one of the most notorious football player drug users. A member of this BBS warned us about his problems before we signed him, so the information was already in the public domain. Drugs are rife in our society. As a club, we're not above having players on the books affected by this issue.
Dean Jones got caught taking speed. young men with lots of money and leisure time take drugs. Not exactly news.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-barnsley-player-fails-drugs-test-1294854.html Was definitely amphetamines I wrote an article for When Saturday Cones about it.
People with not much money take drugs!.....People who work and don't have much leisure time take drugs!
I know and none of it really matters unless they are taking stuff that enhances performance rather than stuff that makes them dance round the flashing lights at the door of the all night garage.
Speed enhances performance. It was the drug of choice for cyclists before more sophisticated products were developed (and before tests were developed for identifying amphetamines in the blood). Anyone who has ever taken it will testify that it increases alertness and prolongs endurance.
Both phet and E are ******* awful after the event. Especially with the latter. You'd go from feeling at 'at one' with the world, loving who you are, loving everything and everyone, with the attention span of a goldfish, to a few hours down the line feeling the complete opposite. Great couple of scenes in Human Traffic that pretty much nail both the high and the comedown on E. I imagine young Jose felt totally at one with his career as a footballer, then realised he'd ended up at Sheff Utd and so took E. Can't really blame him. I do though find it quite puzzling that the club instantly suspended the lad, yet never took that sort of action with their former striker with the wandering arms (and ****).
