Good business taking Ashley Ward as we got great service and handsome profit. That said, I'd take a Ian Dowie type player now, he woudl lead our line very well and notch a few goals.

I agree. Flicker seems to be looking for a goal poacher. I think daggers/rose could fill that role if we signed a strong ball winner who could provide the supply and give us a greater physical presence... Let the defenders know they are in a game.
To be honest Dowie would have been a good option at the time, although we wouldn't have got the same kind of profit on him...doubt we would have stayed up with him though, maybe if we'd signed Fjortoft sooner we could have clinched the few extra points needed to survive. It was lack of strength in depth that sent us down. A commendable effort though when you see how badly loads of teams have done in the ensuing years though
One of the reasons Dowie gave was that when West Ham played at Oakwell, first match of the season, he was warming up in front of the Reds fans in the West Stand and they sang about him being ugly!! He thought the fans would not take to him !

According to John Dennis tonight it was money, pure and simple. Everything was agreed with West Ham, so John and Danny Wilson sat down with Dowie and his agent Mick McGuire. John offered more than he was really willing to give and when Dowie and McGuire left the room to discuss it, John said to Danny that he really hoped they would turn it down as he'd offered too much. They turned it down, John said that's it then and Danny said let's get Ashley Ward instead.
