just been made redundant today with immediate effect and was just wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice about signing on etc . . .

now im on 24 but its the first time i will have been out of work, and to some people this might seem a daft question . . . but how and where do i sign on?

i know i cant sign on until i get my redundancy letter, but what i dont know is how long will it take me to get any money paid to me?

    any advice is much appreciated!

    cheers, James

Contact your local job centre, they'll point you in the right direction.

Also, if you've got any credit card debt or loans outstanding, could be worth contacting them. They may reduce or suspend the interest.

Contact all creditors including mortgage to explain your situation, sooner rather than later..they should be sympathetic. and help you.

Sorry to hear that, same happened to me end of December and first time unemployed since leaving school 12 years ago.

You can register your job seekers claim (dole) online at the job centre plus website. They will then call you back and arrange a suitable date for you to go into the nearest office and tell you what documents you need to take. They also tell you if you can claim for anything else (I.e. Council Tax reduction, childcare support).
If you owe ny money whether that be mortgage, Credit Card, Loan then contact them. If you have payment protection request the forms and get them sent off.

Good luck with finding something else, I'm finding it very difficult for the type of work I do.

Firstly you will only be able to claim from the next working day after your final day of employment which will be set out in your redundancy letter.

I went online to the 'Jobcentre' and made a new claim, they then ring you within two working days to ask you a thousand and ten questions and confirm the info you submitted online. They then will arrange an appointment for you at your local jobcentre (don't wory if you don't know where it is they will tell you) to see somebody.

I firstly sat with a finance member of staff and then a jobseeker, all in all i was in about an hour.

You will get roughly £60.60 a week and have to sign on at the same time and day every fortnight.

If you are a homeowner or renting you can claim for 'Housing benefit and councill tax benefit

Assuming you don't have £16'000 upwards of savings you should get what you are entitled, although if you have more than £6'000 in bank you could be stopped £1 in every £250 you have saved.

Regarding your payoff from your employer,if you've been there less than 2 years you will probs just get Feb's wage and a month

Was it enforced redundancy or voluntary? If voluntary then don't bother signing on as you won't be entitled to any payment but they'll still have you attending all the restart stuff....I discovered this about 7 years ago so didn't bother signing on.
If it's enforced then that's a different matter.

    much appreciated, thanks.

just rang them up and sorted everything out and got a time and date to go and see them.

luckily i have no loans or mortgage to pay pay for yet, just general bills so hopefully will be ok in the short term.

its just about getting my name and CV out there i suppose in terms of getting a new job.

The "advice" on here is less than useless.

My advice is ... get another job.
Working the Town Hall steps is better than begging from us upstanding tax payers.

    That should do it.
