Two day trip, taking in the match, (hehe, I found it quite amusing even if we were in the Stretford End), and today Museum, and Stadium tour. Now I know MUFC is a multiple million pound company, but there are so many littlle things that they do there that just encourage you to get wrapped up in the whole experience. From catering packages (pie and a pint package, reasonably priced); sweets for kids reasonably priced etc; to affordable souvenirs(no I didn't buy any!) There were Pa messages informing fans that if they found any behaviour undesirable, to text the helpline number with a description of your complaint, the nature of the problem, the seat number, and assistance would be there immediately to sort out the issue. The museum, wasn't quite as good as Barcelona's in my opinion, but again a lot of the items would have cost the club nothing .. Loads of donated kit from players etc. The one thing that really hits you is the images of united players everywhere in the stadium. I know BFC can never afford to stretch itself to the same extent, but there are ways of making the ground a lot more inviting.
main thing is ..you escaped... now go seek therapy before its too late, you can still be saved from the Dark side.
Re: main thing is ..you escaped... now go seek therapy You do get caught up in it - I went to a game last year and it felt like a wembley trip - all the food stalls outside , flags etc - even getting a tram to the game. I couldn't do it every week though - strange atmosphere - they expect to win every game and I felt the fans were really complacent and not up for the game. Then again fulham did just roll over and die which dudn't help
I go to OT for a few games each season its a different world, Mark Jones memorial is in the upper of the Stretford end. Do we still do stadium tours for the local kids? we used to years ago. Didn't the supporters club also try and get a museum a few years ago but nothing came of it? You don't need to be a successful Championship winning side to have one, the Preedys bar would have been an ideal space. I've visited various ones around Europe..Milan, Old Trafford, Barca and the Milan one is about the size of Preedys. Could have shown the history from the beginning to present day showing the cup medals, cup final ball etc and medals, trophies from 1997 and the play off final, old photo's. Many schools could have had a museum and stadium tour to get them interested. But to be honest if it costs its never going to happen at Oakwell, l wouldnt waste your breath, go there for 2.58pm leave at 4.50pm pretend its just shut the rest of the week, if they want to generate income they have to spend some but the current board won't, they have their reasons.
Re: main thing is ..you escaped... now go seek therapy Spot on, they don't know they're born that's for sure. The more the match went on, and the more the woman next to me got agitated, the more I wanted Palace to hang on. Couldn't believe the amount of fans who left as it went to extra time. I know some folks had kids, maybe trains to catch etc, but it was as if half the crowd just couldn't be bothered with it any more.
The club obviously can't afford to spend massive amounts on images of players etc, but then again the concourses don't have to be concrete grey either. If we are a "Community Club" then we should engage our community more on projects to enhance the ground and match day experience. I bet there are a few budding artists out there (And i dont mean Fista!!! ) who would love to be let loose on the concourses to create something meaningful. I,m sure there are decorators/ tradesmen who would love an easier way of disposing of unused resources. When we were in the Prem, I went to an exhibition at the Cooper Gallery... All football, largely BFC. There was this series of photos of fans lined up in the queue for programmes for the West Ham match. It was brilliant. Imagine a re creation of that around the concourses.
Why would it cost much to stick images up? I am no artist or graphics expert, but surely it wouldnt cost much to stick images up over the concrete.. You could have the 1912 squad, the Clarke era squad, the 96-97 squad, and the 05-06 squad. Any promotion squads basically. And then obviously, images of the trips to Wembley new and old. The Prem season. And so on.. with of course, the great players we've had - Glavin, Redfearn, Taylor, Hignett, Addison... and old images in each particular stand, of how it used to look. The things you could do are neverending, and thats why, like Dyson, I want a job at Oakwell
Re: Why would it cost much to stick images up? I'm with you guys. I've never understood why those big brick walls in the east stand haven't been plastered and decorated/painted, something to brighten them up a bit. I'm sure Barnsley College would love to give a few students doing decorating/plastering the chance to do work at Oakwell. The students learn, BFC get the job down for nowt, fans are happier. If all the little things were put right, the bigger issues in life would be easier to solve.
Re: Why would it cost much to stick images up? Depends what you put up. In the exec boxes they have some very good photos....blown up to huge wall size. But I think they should be all over the ground. It would undoubtedly cost to do it. I suppose ground decoration is not a priority, but something needs doing.
Re: Why would it cost much to stick images up? I offered some time ago... any guesses on the response?
Re: Why would it cost much to stick images up? all the closet man ure fans coming out i see.....you should be ashamed...if you are going to have a second team..... stick to Liverpool please. hope this helps
The trouble is, Manure sell out almost every week I think (last night was their worst gate for 6 years and there was still 50k+), I can't see us pulling in more fans by putting pictures up, or not at least enough to make the effort worthwhile, no matter how dark and dingy (sp) the concourse in the ponty end is.
Not about putting pictures up... It's about taking small inexpensive steps to make Oakwell more welcoming. We will never have the funds to do what Man Utd do, but there's nothing wrong with engaging the local community on projects to make Oakwell more of a community owned / proud facility.
Re: Why would it cost much to stick images up? Haha just shown yourself up there. No one in this thread is a closet Man u fan. You have just declared yourself a closet Liverpool fan. Well done.
Have you ever been to the Amsterdam Arena for the stadium tour and and the Ajax museum? Last time I went to Amsterdam with the lads from work (about 8 or 9 years since now - blimey) we made the trip on our last day and (despite their various sexual deviances..) they all agreed this was easily the best half-day we'd spent. Inspiring stuff, seeing the four European Cups they won (three before it became the money-making junket it is now), memories of the likes of Cruyff et al, and Michels, real football people who understood the importance of and loved the shirt they wore (team and national), 'Total Football' brought down to the club level. Not ashamed to say it reduced me to tears, and it was a wonderful afternoon watching the lads (many of whom were Wakey/Ponte/Cas i.e. Rugby League disciples) start to understand how basically meaningless the Premier League and/or Champions League really are in the history of real football.
