If they’d kept Pinnock - or sold him and brought in Sollbauer/similar in August, and they kept Kieffer Moore - or signed a replacement of a similar mould.

A proper centre back who was out of nappies for all the season, and a centre forward to challenge physically and aerially - instead of relying on Jacob Brown to win headers against big centre backs, to give us a different option.

Would those two things alone have been enough to have kept us up?

I honestly think with an experienced head in the back four all season and a physical threat up front we’d have been mid table. Yes today (yesterday technically at this time) was awful, but looking at the 41 games and the ways we’ve lost games or even scraped a point, we’d have had a fair few more points from August to Christmas.

But what lessons have been learned? We know what to expect this summer / autumn. Window open, paying-in book open, chequebook closed.

“Barnsley FC can confirm Cauley Woodrow has joined Reading Football Club on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee. Barnsley FC would like to take this opportunity to thank Cauley for his efforts while at the club, and confirm that an interest has been retained in his future”.

“Barnsley FC are delighted to announce the signing of highly sought-after striker Kabongo Tshimanga from National League side Boreham Wood FC. Kabongo, 23, is a quick and powerful forward with an eye for goal, hailing originally from Kinshasa, DR Congo, though started his career at MK Dons having come through the ranks there from the under 10’s.”

Reds CEO Dane Murphy had the following to say: “landing Kabongo is a real coup for us, there was interest from other clubs and so we are naturally thrilled that he chose us over Barrow and Salford City. We can’t compete with those types of teams on wages so I guess we are lucky that Kabongo accepted our incentivised offer, which is a private matter but I can confirm involves Scotch Eggs and a multipack of peanut lion bars”.

If Kabongo's 23 I think he'll be a bit out of our league, too much experience. You need to set your sights a bit lower, possibly a 19 year old from Richmond and Hampton Borough
