By Mark Metcalf and David Wood. If anyone hasn't read it. it's the story of our cup runs of 1910 and 1912, with match reports from every game in the competitions. Alongside these there is a brief history of the club at that time with all it's relevant characters, alongside various major news items of the period. For example, the RMS Titanic sank at the beginning of the week leading up to the Cup Final against West Bromwich Albion at Crystal Palace.
There is a copy of the report from the Barnsley Independent, which includes a wonderful description of Harry Tuffnell's winning goal two minutes from the end of extra time of the replay at Bramall Lane,
"Getting the ball in midfield, he made for the Albion citadel with promptitude and alacrity by the nearest route".
They simply don't write 'em like that any more!:D
I can recommend this book if you haven't read it, a great work on a major part of our club's history.

'Citadel' sounds more like a Medieval battle than a football match. Just getting the dictionary out for 'alacrity'
Thanks for the recommendation might buy this.

I've got that book as well JLWBigLil. Great read as you say. I was reading a book on Football in the 20's and when describing a goal, the author said " he despatched the spherical beyond the custodians charge."!

Used to love the spelling mistakes in the Green 'Un. Reporting on the game between Wednesday and Man U they said
" Charlton had a sh*t from 30 yards but messed it up." The English tutor at Donny College used to photocopy parts of the Green 'Un pass them out and ask students to correct the grammar and punctuation. Probably happened because the reports were phoned in from the grounds after the game and written down by young "copy writers" . I have to be honest ,Saturday nights are not the same without the Green ' Un.!

I used to get really frustrated with my Dad, as he had the audacity of wanting to read HIS Green 'Un before I did!:D
