....after all the manager talk I was thinking about the squad a new manager will inherit, what I've arrived at worries me.... Luke Steele, lost a bit of form for me, pulls off a few blinders but command of his area and crosses are questionable, our back up keepers are no better either, Alnwick too small. Foster, lost a bit of pace and become indecisive, makes some poor decisions at times. McNulty, divided opinion last season, doesn't this...he's dreadful and conference at best. Cranie, jury's out, not blown me away in any game so far. Wiseman, maybe a scapegoat and harshly treated at times but he is clueless at defending. Golbourne, lightweight, will develop in time. Perkins, our version of Gordon Strachan, every side needs one of these. Dawson, as above, but don't need two in the same team. Mellis, talented lad, needs to do it week in and out, tends to let perks do his closing down. O'Brien, decent winger, runs blood to water, like to see in a confident side. Done, done Harewood, done Davies, irrelevant, be gone in days Ethuhu, shows nothing Dagnall, effort 100%, can't score for toffee Sir Bobby, got a year left tops at this level So guys, my point is Pep Guardiola might struggle with this bunch, only saving grace is although bottom we're not adrift but if you look at the above IMHO we NEED at least 7 new players in January.
Players can be transformed under a new manager with different methods and better organisation. Not convinced that Hill and Flitcroft were that good as defensive coaches and a better coach could make us more solid - also his selection was different every week and he never had a settled back four. We definitely need a striker or too though, goals have been the main problem...
We don't score because we don't create enough and we piss about with it too much in areas that usually only hurt us
Stones to wiseman to mcfaulty to goldbourne to Dawson back to stones to wiseman to Steele who gives it big booit
The timining of Hill's depature will cost us.2 weeks too late in my opinion. Firstly the club needs to advertise the postion of manager. Then narrow it down to a short list. Then interview candidates. Then make an appointment. He then needs to come in and assess the squad (plus the loanees possibly leaving/plus bids for our "better" players) Then see what areas need improving within the first team/squad. Then try and bring his own players in whilst in the mean time trying to get positive results. All the the space of one calendar month.
What exactly do you mean by advertising? I think that all the potential managers in England (and abroad) have already heard that Barnsley are looking for a new manager, and any realistic candidate should know what to expect from the job.
There are some poor players but it depends who you are comparing our squad to? You can look at most sides in the bottom half and see a lot of their players who wouldn't even get in our team. It's definitely possible to improve the squad significantly in January but there'd have to be a bit of a clearout. If I was Don I'd be contacting the clubs who were after Done and McNulty to see if they are interested in a cut-price transfer, see if Pompey want Etuhu back, and maybe try and get a few million for Stonesy. Obviously in an ideal world you'd keep John Stones but we need match winners and better central defenders, if his transfer fee allows us to do this then sacrificing him is a no-brainer.
Isn't a paradox when you, say, go back in time to 1955 and your mother falls in love with you which prevents her from meeting your father?
Any out of work manager, or one who wants to step up a division or 2, will have had an eye on the Barnsley manager's job given our lack of form this season so may well have an idea of the strength (and lack of it) in our squad. They will also have players in mind who they may have previously tried and failed (for any number of reasons) to sign, ones that have previously played for them etc.
I can feel you optimism slowly ebbing away. My god! What if we sell Wiseman and Dagnall in January? Will you be ok?
Not wained at all, still think we'll be ok and the strategy Hill started is the right one. Also think the work he's done sets us up for the future. Not fussed over Wiseman, Dagnall a different story.
