Never mind all the "two poor teams" comments, especially on the Gillingham fans' board. In poor conditions it was a really hardworking away performance, and a thoroughly deserved win. They had a few openings where they had a player in our box with the goal at his mercy but they either blasted over or Davies made great saves. He's making a habit of that - long may it continue. There was some quality all over the field from us. Naturally there were mistakes but just think back to a few weeks ago. They were making mistakes all over the pitch, sometimes with dire consequences. Now it is just the odd misplaced pass or cross. Lalkovich is infuriating the way he gets into great positions and then squanders it, but at least we have a threat down both sides if he and O'Sullivan both play. Nice to give defenders something to think about. J O'S is looking good for me and that rasping shot near the end deserved a goal. It was a good performance - not a great one - but good enough to secure two doubles in a week. How about that then!! Lastly there was a bizarre situation right at the end when we broke with Hourihane. He played a lovely ball to Lalkovich who, for the first time, checked back and played a great return to CH. Obviously desperate to score he shot on target but a few months ago that would have screamed into the top corner. But just freeze that frame. There were FOUR Barnsley players in the box against TWO defenders. No settling for a 1-0 there then. Great to see. Can't wait for tomorrow night now. Time to put that Coventry hoodoo to bed!
I've only managed to get there on time to do that once, early in the season. I'm usually pitching up at the last minute. I did get invited for donating the fridge freezer but not managed that yet!
Will have to disagree with the paragraph about the Hourihane/Lalkovic chance. The ball played through was pretty poor, which is why Lalkovic wasn't running through on goal and instead had to play it back. Was infuriating watching it live as that would have avoided the nervy end to the game. Solid performance and solid win though. Can't argue with three clean sheets in a row.
Wouldn't call it poor exactly, but I agree it sent him wide instead of being in with a shot on goal. I suppose what I meant it was a nicely weighted, accurate pass but I was really highlighting the fact that instead of cutting in himself, as he usually does, Milan then checked back and saw that CH was better placed to shoot. Of course what should have happened then was that Hourihane should have slid it through to one of the other two for an even better shooting chance. Suppose there was a chance of offside though. Just notable for me that we had a four on two situation like that, instead of having ten men in our half defending the lead. 2-0 would have made things much more comfortable, but this is Barnsley. We are used to it!
