which teams are placed where in the leagues based on the last say 25 years, average attendances and so called 'big club' ideas where would we be?

ive always regarded us as an average second tier team based on the fact most of the years i have supported The Reds we have been in this league. But i wonder if times have moved on and we would be regarded as a third tier team now.

Suppose Weeds would be in the top tier? But should Fulham be classed as a Top tier team?

I dunno what it is but

.... I would say we are probably looked upon as a team and town punching above our weight and more suited to the third tier.</p>

Probably a combination of some of the following;</p>

Moderate sized town in ex industrial area, surrounded by some big old favourites and a lot of small town competitors.</p>

The music hall type stigma we've carried for at least a century.</p>

    Mining/ ex miningsecond besttype communities</p>

Seem to have ahistory of flailing about the lower divisions pre 1982, we were bottom of the fourth tier at one point in the 66/67 season.</p>

Premiership was good, but hilighted our lowly flash in the pan status and our inability to get back up, followed by 4 years in tier three and administration.</p>

Two seasons in tier two while we flirt with possible relegation.</p>

Sharing the division with such fallen giants as Wolves, Coventry, Dee Dar land, Southampton, as other teams have ousted them from the Prem, etc doesn't help - only shows off how small we seem by the side of these. We used to share the second tier with the likes of Tranmere, Port Vale and Oxford.</p>

General public interpretation and that wry smile you get when people in the media talk about us, not in an offensive way mind.</p>

HOWEVER - I sense a change in attitude and aspiration in a number of different directions, and if this is sustained and continued I reckon we could be in for a bigger and brighter future. It will take years to establish, but it's both possible and probable.</p>

    Football is cyclical

and the teams that you mention will come back at some point in the future. How long is it since Carlisle were at this level?

    RE: Football is cyclical

You're right, but somehow I don't feel that we always benefit from the positive cycles that happen - unless I have a persecution complex or something :) </p>

Were Carlisle ever at this level?</p>

    Don't you remember 1974/75 ?

Not only were they in the old Division 1 (and were top of the table after three games!!), one of the clubs they replaced after winning promotion was Manchester United. The last time they were at this level was 1985/86.

    I believe

We have spent more years in the second tier of English football than any other team

There was one in the programme a few seasons ago (I think it was either in 2002 or 2003) based on points by position, so 92 points for being top of Premier/Div 1 down to 1 point finishing bottom of L2/Div 4. It placed us 11th in the 2nd tier.

Don't know how many years it covered though.

I put something like that up on here season before last

I think I still have spreadsheet at home so could up date it for last two seasons.</p>

It was based on positions and points from onset of premier league (1 point for top etc)</p>

    We were placed around the 30 - 35 mark I think.</p>
