Last night we had 6 players in the team that were playing for us last season. Namely Steele Foster O'Brien Butterfield Doyle Gray Can anyone disagree that to a man they are far better players now than last season under Robins?
I've been saying the same this morning! It must come down to great man management and playing the right football
Re: Especially O, Brien - or is that becuase his contract is due to run out soon !!! Maybe he makes them feel wanted and valued
I'll go for or what Doyle isn't doing anything he wasn't doing last season where he was first class in the majority of games. Good to see he's continuing in the same vein. Foster is his usual reliable self. The criticism he's had in the past on this board has been ridiculous. He's always been a good player for us. Steele has gradually got better and better since we signed him. He was still quite young when we got him and prone to errors, but he's been steadily maturing year on year. I wouldn't swap him for any other 'keeper in the Championship. I would have said the same last season. I've always thought Butterfield has been an exceptional talent. I was frustrated last season that Robins didn't play him more often, but maybe that was the best way to bring him on. Hill is now reaping the rewards of having an excellent young player who was brought through the ranks in the right way. The two players that have shown marked improvement from previous seasons are Andy Gray and Jim O'Brien. Gray is playing his best football since he's been at the club and Jim O'Brien is like a new signing, such is his advancement. Hill has got to take some credit for that. But that doesn't make him a miracle worker, just a good manager. He's continuing to get the best out of players who have already shown in the past that they're more than capable and he's got a couple of players to up their game. A miracle worker would have us at the top of the league. A decent manager has us in mid-table, playing decent football with areas of our game that still need improvement. We're good to watch at the moment, but as yet we are nothing special.
Re: I'll go for or what Pretty much agree with what you said - also dont forget that Robins was hailed as a miracle worker after his first few months in charge as well Very happy with what Hill has done so far but he still has a way to go to be elevated to the levels of Clarke Hunter and Wilson in the great Barnsley managers hall of fame For me he has the really important principle of trying to play football the right way, and also we might be getting our Battling Barnsley tag
Re: I'll go for or what Only points I don't agree with Jay are: 1. I think it's fairly speculative to credit Butterfield's improvement to the fact that Robins hardly ever played him - I think the credit is with Hill on this one. 2. To say that a "decent" manager would have us in mid-table is underestimating the task at hand in my view. A decent manager would ahve us just clear of relegation, yet it would take a good manager to lift us to mid-table. But then maybe that's just semantics.
I perhaps worded it wrongly I didn't mean that Butterfield is a good player because Robins didn't play him. I meant that Hill has been fortunate enough to inherit Butterfield at a time when he is physically and mentally ready to be playing first team football every week, when perhaps in the past he wasn't. Still, Hill has played him in a position where he is very influential and he's given him the armband which Butterfield has revelled in. Keith Hill is doing very well with Jacob Butterfield, but I think the lad has always been a very good player and it's only now that he's ready for the rigours of Championship football on a weekly basis.
Re: I perhaps worded it wrongly to be a good manager and have success you have to have a basis of a good team to start with or its going to take a while to generate it,but you have also got to have a GOOD MANAGER who can improve on what he has at his disposal and the Hill-croft era maybe the best since Danny Wilson took us to the Prem. Cant fault the Board on there signings. Bet Kieran Trippier wish he were still with us!
Re: Keith Hill - miracle worker or what?..........YES The team he has built this season is fantastic..........but we are still short of players, especially one maybe two quality strikers ...........only wish he had some money to spend on a couple of strikers Rest of the team look really really solid
