Joke selections. Should have picked a proper batsman and a proper bowler.

    This.

England have only made a couple of changes all series. Need to bring new players through.

Compton? Bairstow? Taylor? Tremlett? None of them established in the team. What happens with Bairstow now? Are we taking him to Australia or not?

It's an Ashes test match. It's not for experimenting in.

Exactly , those who say there's nothing to play for do not understand test cricket. BEATING THE AUSSIES IS TO PLAY FOR. that should be enough on its own but if we win this test we also go above India into second place in the test rankings. That said a team must evolve but to simply pick players to "have a look" is wrong . the lions team is there for that purpose.

the treatment of Bairstow has been shocking... 1 test in India when he's been carrying drinks for 2 months then thrust into the ashes after carrying drinks for another preceding 6 weeks during the champions trophy one dayers.

Even though its 3 nil for me if there was more competition for places a number of batsmen would be struggling for their place, toss has decided 2 tests and there are no young quicks under 25 pushing for a place. Basically Tim Brennan is our best all rounder. Bairstow is on the plane to Australia could pressure Matt Prior for the gloves an excellent fielder as well. We need to find some more test players in the next 2 or 3 years.

All fair points, but going on that you'd have picked a proper out and out batsman wouldn't you if you were taking Bairstow out? Taylor or Compton for example.

Perhaps but Adul Rashid is a key factor in Yorkshires success this season and is worth one more chance.

Hope Kerrigan can bat, his bowling's crap. 2 Overs for 28 in a test!

Just got back from the Oval and have to say, the moment it was announced Woakes and Kerrigan were selected, there was a lot of murmurings that it was a poor selection.

The balance of the side looks all wrong and why select another spinner when Root and Pietersen are both decent bowlers on a turning pitch... but hey ho. Hopefully they both improve on todays showing. A very flat pitch so fingers crossed we get decent use of it too.

Have tickets for days 3, 4 and 5 too so at least I will see England lift the Ashes!!!

A Division 2 spinner thrust into an Ashes series - is Tredwell injured? As for the number 6 position, what does James Taylor need to do to get another shot? He's having another great season. I'm glad he's not playing for Notts against Yorkshire at the moment for sure.
