In my opinion it's very sad that anyone who is the full-time carer for a partner with a debilitating and ultimately terminal illness should find themselves in such a desperate financial situation that they feel the need to not declare what is by most people's standards a very small annual income. For me, the sadness is only compounded by the obscene amounts of money that some very mediocre footballers rake in these days.

I agree with you MT, it is a very sad story. He got caught out and was rightfully punished but to see a footballer of such a stature fall on such hard times is a very sad state of affairs. It puts into perspective just how the game has changed financially in a relatively short period of time. I hope he gets back on track asap.

Compassion is a word some people will never understand.... aggression and self centredness is a trait all to often seen...its to be hoped that people lacking compassion never need it..

Compassion is rarely seen on here. This board is generally inhabited by a bunch of self righteous, hard hearted tossers. There are a handful of posters who I would genuinely enjoy a pint and a chat with and that's probably the only reason I still pop on every couple of days.

When I was made redundant I went to an agency in Sheffield and they asked me if I was interested in P/T work. I said I could not afford to do this as it would void my mortgage cover if I was in paid employment so I had to work full time. I was told you could work up to 16 hours per week and still be registered unemployed and it would not affect you. I don't know anything about carer's allowances but with it only being a few hours work he may have thought the same thing - and I'm just speculating.

It's a shame he is in the situation especially when you consider the ridiculous salaries that even the most average player can claim BUT a game he left 30 years ago does not owe him a living.

absolutely spot on, hate hearing ex players whine about how skint they are, 99% of the country are skint, we just learn to deal with it
