Why are his management trying to end his carrer?? I think they are hoping Khan will be too quick for him... I think he will be in the first few rounds, then when he gets tired Barrera will put him on his arse.... Barrera has been in with the best and can take serious punishment and just keep coming. He's the wrong person to put Khan in against...
I think its a pointless fight, and the only upside is for Barrera. Its not just a boxing match Khan could lose here. Its his credibility and ultimately the all important Box Office status and pay per view rights. The US will not touch him ever if this goes tits up.
Khan will beat Barrera He's got the coach with the perfect game plan, he's put extra weight on to parts of his body that needed it, and most importantly Barrera is the one stepping up in weight here and going against someone who is already a big lightweight. Should make for an excellent fight, and I see Kahn coming out the winner by 9th or 10th round knockout.
I couldn't believe it when I first heard about this fight. Barrera is a class above Khan. I don't think Khan can knock this guy out and Berrera will keep coming, and can bang himself. I just can't see Khan living with him. And then what for Khan?
I like Barrera for what he did to Hamed. I don't like Khan for his idiotic driving offences. 140 mph on the M62, and then failed to appear at court. Hope he gets knocked out.
Loko I am totally in agreement. Kahn will win by stoppage in the last third of the fight. Barrera is NOT the force of old, although he is still a class fighter, he has never fought at this weight and Khan is now with probably the best trainer around at the minute. People remember what happened with Naz against Barrera, but forget just how long ago it was. Manny Pac says that Khan will win by stoppage, so that is good enough for me.
I always have doubts about boxers that retire too Once you've decided to quit the ring you should definitely stay there, and for Barrera to quit the ring, and then come back at a higher wait just seems a little crazy to me. I get the feeling some people don't realise how Barrera has performed in the last three years or so, and like you say are going back almost ten years to the Hamed fight when judging how Kahn will fair. Out of all the boxers in the Freddie Roach gym Kahn is the only one who can keep up with Manny in training, and I think that fitness, plus his hand speed, will win him the fight. If Kahn can get his feet settled for the first two rounds you could see him grow in confidence and put on a pretty decent performance
Agreed. Dont see anything but defeat for Khan. He has shown he doesnt have the best jaw and they put him in with a legend at this weight who can take everything that Khan can throw at him. Barrera will knock him out by 7th round.
I will say this again Barrera IS MOVING UP IN WEIGHT, he is not a legend at this weight at all, he has only fought at LOWER weights, when he fought Naz he was 2 weight classes down. He is slower now and easier to hit, still has a good chin, but is definitely very beatable nowadays. Khan will win and go on to be World Champion, probably in 2 divisions.
Lack of knowledge perhaps Mark? Never knew Barrera made his name at Lightweight . . . . . . . . . . .
Most definitely People can only remember Barrera from one fight, they probably have not seen him since. If Khan was going up against Pacman etc. then I would be worried, but Barrera is a big name that is very beatable, especially at this weight.
I meant to ask you Did you make it to The Metrodome last week? I caught the second half of the Monroe fight via Justin.tv after work, as well as the Jeffries fight. Quietly impressed with what I saw from both.
No I didnt go money is a bit tight but watched it . Both of them looked as though they will do well in the future. I could not understand the croowd booing Degale in Birmingham, I think they thought he should have bombed him out, but that does nothing for the learning of these youngsters that are just starting out. I know he is on a big retainer , but he should not be rushed.
seems like he is in good nick!!! Amir Khan showed all the benefits of a lengthy training camp in California today as he wowed the press during a media workout in Bolton. Looking in the shape of his life, Khan vowed to set up a world title opportunity when he faces Marco Antonio Barrera next weekend. The 22-year-old will meet the legendary Mexican March 14 at the M.E.N Arena in a fight that will effectively double as a WBO lightweight world title eliminator. Integrated Sports is distributing three 12-round championship bouts featured on the “Khan-Barrera” pay-per-view card, presented by Frank Warren, in North America for live viewing at 4 PM/ET – 1 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice, Shaw Cable, Star Choice and Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. A replay will be shown later that night starting at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT. Veteran blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke and color analyst, former WBC lightweight champion Jim Watt, will be calling the action from ringside for Sky Box Office and Integrated Sports PPV. Khan has spent the last six weeks in LA working with acclaimed trainer Freddie Roach. It follows an initial two-month spell on the west coast of America following his loss to Breidis Prescott. That training camp resulted in Khan beating Oisin Fagan at the ExCeL Arena in December, and he’s hoping for another victory under Roach on March 14. The American will join Khan over the weekend. “I can’t wait for the fight on Saturday,” said Khan. “I’ve still got to prove a few people wrong and hopefully I can do that against Barrera. “He’s a great fighter but I think his style is made for mine. This is the right fight at the right time for me. I’ve had a fantastic training camp in the States, and everything has gone brilliantly. “Freddie is such a knowledgeable trainer and so is everyone around him. We’ve worked out a good game plan for Barrera, and now it’s a case of putting it into action.” As he was ahead of the Fagan fight, Khan hasn’t bulked up in the States, suggesting, unsurprisingly, that he will be relying on his speed against Barrera. "We've worked on my body shape and I'm happy with the way things have gone," said Khan. "I felt so good against Fagan, we've done the same kind of things in camp fitness wise this time around
I don't think the booing was anything to do with his performance He was very arrogant in all his pre-fight interviews, turning up on Soccer am boasting about how he was going to walk through his opponent. In the end he struggled, and looked poor (but still won every round). Despite been the only Gold medalist I have major doubts about Degale, don't think his style is made for the pro game, but I'll enjoy watching how all the Olympains turn out. They could be the best bunch of boxers to turn pro in my era, as Kahn is the probably the only fighter I've watched right from the start (Calzaghe and Hatton were about ten fights in, as was Naz). I hope Monroe stays at European level for his next three or four fights, then takes the risk of a World Title Fight. He's good enough to make some money at that level first before having one crack at the big time. Would hate for him to have a go no, come up short, and not get that winning mentality back. Some boxers never make it back from failed World Title attempts. (be interesting to see who Michael Jennings fights next).
RE: I will say this again I really don't know what you have seen in Khan to suggest he can go on to be a 2 weight world champion. He has struggled against some far from world class opponents and just cannot stand up to any sort of heavy chin/jaw blow. Even though Barrera is moving up I can see him knocking Khan out. Barrera will be able to take what Khan dishes out.
