I've looked at much of the debate on here following what seems to have been a capitulation yesterday.

It's all fine and dandy to talk about what we are 'building'. The fact is - we've been 'building' since Andy Ritchie (unexpectedly) took us back up to the Championship before being prematurely dismissed. Since then we've had numerous false dawns under Davey, Robbins (also (effectively) dismissed prematurely) and the numpties that Hill and Flitcroft turned out to be. We've a young team, which contains some undeniably promising prospects. But (and Danny must know this in his heart of hearts) they are in no way equipped to allow us to be competitive in this league any time soon. In addition, we know from long-established tradition that the minute any of them show much promise, they will be sold on for what amounts to far less of a price gamble for a Premiership team than it does for us.

I fully realise that the teams of 79/80/81 and 96/97/98 were exceptional, and that we'll not see their like any time soon. And I'm not saying that playoff/promotion prospects are an entitlement or even expectation, either in this league or the Championship. But I think all most fans ask is that we play something approaching vaguely attractive football, and that we win a fair proportion of our games, especially at home. I'm (sadly) closer to 60 than 50, and many of my friends and associates are more 'senior'. I'm fed up of waiting for what we are 'building' - FFS I want entertainment now!

Part of the reason why we are where we are now is that we haven't been building since our promotion back to the championship, we've been standing still at best which has resulted in us stagnating. We had an opportunity to build and we didn't take it. We need to get it right this time.

Yes agree but when we were relegated last season we had to get a new team cut wage bill I imagine. I have watched barnsley scince 96 my dad took me and we had season tickets ever scince robins left he has been a handfull of times scince. I took him to the boro game at xmas he wasnt impressed with the football at all. And yesturday I dont know if we went for a draw or what but ive seen under 16s play better stuff. I used to love the bassett days we had a good team and played some good stuff them were the days you would look forward to the game in mid week I miss them days.

Exactly. Loan after loan is false economy costing us money in agents fees every few months, leaving us with very few saleable assets and meaning that the squad needs rebuilding every January and august. No building whatsoever.

I understand this 'building' theory and I am sure that long-term it qill prove to be the correct strategy. But fielding what is in effect a youth team seems a tad extreme. It's one thing blooding a few youngsters alongside experienced players, but at present we're asking our own academy lads to ease their way into first team football alongside young lads making their own professional debuts. Very difficult to do in this league. Plus, I understand the need for loanees to replenish the squad, but it's hard for me to envisage the building process when at least four of our team are on loan. There still seems to be a scatter-gun approach to signings at times.

In my opinion the managers have been under instruction to build since Hillflicker - but the emphasis at that time was on bringing good lower league players into the club and developing them.

It didn't work - and in my opinion the reason for that is because Pat was either poorly or he was wrapped up in the legal battle.

Things have changed now - there is a new strategy that's plain to see - and in my mind its a strategy that is very very interesting no matter if we win or lose.

At some point, either next season or the season after that, these young players that are coming together are going to gel and be a real force in this division and the one above

You could be right, under the correct manager.

Mark Robins was the right manager - always said that

Keith Hill and Flicker was the right management team - always said that

And now Danny Wilson is the right manager - always said that

How many GOOD managers are we going to hire and fire ???
The problems do not lie at the door of the managers we have had in resent years - they lie at the door of the owner Pat Cryne.
Pat has appointed some really good managers but the strategy going forward has been flawed.
Hopefully this has now been sorted out with the influence of Ben and Maurice at the club - and in my opinion this is why Pat has brought these two in.
