Getting in the mood for the new season. Just watched the King Ronnie video on youtube:

Remembering that he's not been well this summer, I'd love to pay tribute to him again. Can we get him on the pitch pre-match or at half-time (or both!) at the first home game against Burton? Come on BFC - make it happen!

I think he'd be an amazing guest for the Radio Barnsley lads, if someone could contact him. I agree regards him being a guest at a match too.

Sounds good - I'd also like to see a campaign to get rimmo an honour for services to football - about time

Yes - completely agree about Rimmo. Would be great to get him on the pitch too. He probably wouldn't want it but he definitely deserves it. And anything that gets the crowd up for the game has to be good.

Thank you for posting the video again. Truly wonderful memories of the best player I've ever seen turn out for Barnsley, bar none.

Can't we just cut out the middleman and get him declared the actual king, he would do a much better job than Charles.

I hate when folk refer to him as Ronnie Glavin and not by his proper name

I was thinking the other day it's sad for our younger fans that they will ever see anyone of king Ronnie's quality at Oakwell. Football has changed so much that we could never hope to sign anyone of that level and if we did he would play about 20 games before we flogged him.

Ronnie was easily the best player I've ever seen in a Barnsley shirt. There was real excitement every time he got hold of the ball. I can remember walking through the Paddock terraces, heading towards the exit as injury time neared completion at the end of a game we were losing by a single goal. Many others were drifting towards the exit. Ronnie got hold of the ball and instinctively everyone stopped to watch, knowing there was a chance something spectacular could happen. No other player had that. He sent a shiver of excitement through the crowd. Great close control, amazing dribbling skills and the ability to beat a player with ease.

As a member of the younger generation of our support, and I mean that with the greatest respect, could you please share with me / other fans of my age group some testimonies about Glavin and why he is lauded by the fans? From the video clips I've watched, I can see he was some player.
Thanks

I think the goal on 7 mins summed up Ronnie. Whether he received the ball up front, out wide, middle of the park, or (as on 7 mins) in his own box, there was a sense of expectation from the crowd and his team-mates that something might happen. More often than not it did ! Folk from other clubs might s****** if I mentioned he was our Messi (am thinking the two big clubs down the road) but Oakwell at the time sounded like the Nou Camp does now when Messi gets the ball. Those four years, 79ish to 83ish were amazing and I just wish there was some Virtual reality technology that could convey it to the likes of yourself. I could wax lyrical all day, but unless you were there............ The buzz in the town a couple of hours before kick-off, the spine tingling atmosphere on Grove Street and the queues for the Ponty End, the roar when the team came out (even when they did the 'Leeds style' salute to the crowd........ and when Ronnie and co took to the pitch, it was magic. Even the buzz in the bogs at Half Time when everyone shouted approval at total strangers (except they weren't, it was the same faces every week) over the first half performance and some piece of Glavin magic . And making your way home knowing you had been truly entertained, hadn't been robbed for the privilidge and the feeling your team was on the cusp of something truly special.

Special days .......

And as mentioned above, I reckon I would be in tears if Rimmo, Glavin and Sir Norman of Hunter walked out onto the pitch again.

This is another of my favourite clips on the Internet of Things ............. and the pic at 30 secs sums up what I meant about the queues. Electric. Nobody on a mobile or checking Facebook; just buzzing in anticipation of another great performance.

Ronnie really was the cream on top of the cake in those days. Some great players, Banger Banks, Big Trevor Aylott, but King Ronnie was special.
As others have mentioned he got the ball and straight away people were off their seats expecting something to happen.
He drove at defences riding tackles and his goal scoring record was amazing.

For some reason I always remember him getting a hat trick in our final game of the season in a 4-1 win against Newport.

I also have a fading memory (and I now question whether it happened) of us playing away at sheffield wednesday in the early eighties. Ronnie was on the bench coming back from injury and we were 2-0 down with 20 mins to go. Then Ronnie starts warming up and all the Barnsley fans start getting excited. People who had turned to leave turned back. You could see the Wednesday players looking at him warming up thinking Oh no, not him.
As he entered the pitch the noise ramped up some more because we knew he was so special. Wednesday fans were singing "you fat b@st@rd" at him.
But he came on and within 5 minutes he pulled one back. Now we were in the ascendency. Ronnie was our talsiman and we were giving him the ball everytime we went forward. Wednesday dropped deeper and deeper. Their fans were whistling for the final whistle, Barnsley fans now in full voice.
I cant remember how long was left when a ball got played over the top. Ronnie latched on to it, rounded the keeper and stroked it into the corner of the net. 2-2.
That's how the game finished. No one else could have done that.

I believe a year or two later he scored the winner there.

"We don't think that footballs boring, Ronnie Glavin's always scoring. Can you hear the Ponty Roaring.....Ronnie is our King"

No love cuts deeper than first love and Ronnie was that for a lot of people. In the dank days of the late 70s and early 80s it felt like an alien had landed at Oakwell. We had many good players at the time but Ronnie operated on a different level to the rest. Whenever he was absent for any reason (just as likely to be a fall out with the manager as an injury) the day got greyer and mood darker. The best player in our best ever team.

Really good players have a balance a way of moving that perplexes the opposition they move the way they think they are going then they go the other. Ronnie had that. His movement and balance really set him apart. Think Craig Hignett but better.

My fondest memory of Ronnie is his 'discussion' with Allan Clarke when told to mark somebody. 'I don't worry about them they worry about me'

A genius. Our greatest player.

For those that never saw him play, the video doesn't really do him justice. There are some special moments on there but 99% of his time on the pitch was never filmed. It wasn't like Sky sports back then where every single moment of every single match could be recorded. You were lucky if you got 10 minutes on Yorksport two or 3 times a year. Match of the Day appearances were limited to once every 5 years. Hence a lot of his really magical performances were never captured on film e.g. the hat-trick against Newport, the magical moments against the Fowls. I worked with Wendesday fans and they dreaded seeing him on the team sheet - he was their nemesis.
