    Stand-up Star 'Excited' to Play...

Local comedian Daniel Kitson is one of the latest to confirm as part of the Celebrity XI to face the Barnsley Legends at Oakwell on Sunday 29[SUP]th[/SUP] July.

Local comedian Daniel Kitson is one of the latest to confirm as part of the Celebrity XI to face the Barnsley Legends at Oakwell on Sunday 29[SUP]th[/SUP] July.

The lifetime Barnsley fan says he is ‘excited’ at the prospect of playing against Barnsley Legends such as Bruce Dyer, Neil Redfearn, Ian Banks, Craig Hignett and Nicky Eaden.

A hugely popular figure on the comedy circuit (his Edinburgh show scheduled for next month recently sold out in 43 minutes), Kitson will join other celebrities such as Shaun Dooley, Darren Gough and David Hirst to face the Legends.

The match – part of the club’s 125[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary celebrations – will also help raise vital funds for the Barnsley Hospice and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Never knew he was a Barnsley fan

I knew he was from Denby Dale but didn't realise he followed the Reds. Suddenly our club feels 200% cooler.

Didn't know he was a reds fan either. Absolute legend. Went to see his show recently in Manchester 'It's always right now, until it's later' which I'd highly recommend to anyone who has chance to see it.

Seen him doing stand up a couple of times as well and there's noone better.

Didn't have him down as a football player though I must say.

Not seen any of his stand-up, I gather he's a "cult" comedian like Stewart Lee so might be an acquired taste.

At least he's not all over those crappy comedy panel shows though.

Re: Never knew he was a Barnsley fan

I've seen him a couple of times in the past at the Fringe, late night shows at (I think) The Stand Comedy Club, his stuff is so intelligent/thoughtful, may be the best stand-up I've ever seen.

Good to know he's a reds fan, although as far as I recall from the way he dealt with the various sycophants in the audience, he'd probably have outright contempt for our reds-based respect!

This could be enough to get me down to Oakwell on the 29th!

Just googled who he is, Spencer off Phoenix Nights. I was told he was a Barnsley fan when Phoenix Nights was in full swing.

Re: Never knew he was a Barnsley fan

I guess you could say he's 'cult' in that his following is relatively small. Very different in style to Stewart Lee though. I wouldn't even say he's an acquired taste...story telling approach to comedy which isn't uncommon. Probably his best stuff is the improvised, ad lib stuff late night in Edinburgh. Few comedians are as sharp as him. I think he's well thought of amongst his peers as well, but has always shunned TV work, panel shows etc. He did do Phoenix Nights but he's said he always regretted it.

Re: Never knew he was a Barnsley fan

Stewart Lee also brilliant live, can you remember his Fist of Fun days? I saw his live show built around his mum seeing Tom O'Connor on a cruise ship, and where he compared Russell Brand (dealing with the Big Brother racism row) with Martin Luther King's own attempts to defeat racism, and dismantling the Carphone Warehouse's 'corporate values', at the West Yorkshire Playhouse a few years back. The stuff of genius.

Funny you should have mentioned him as there are some similarities between the two in terms of their general trains of thought and sardonic styles. You'll notice that neither Kitson nor Lee tend to appear very often (if at all) on the sorts of generic mind-numbing panel shows you're talking about, and respect is due to both for that alone!
