Having just read this tweet: JButterfield19 Jacob Butterfield 6assists and 1 goal in 4games and I'm still **** <s class="hash">#</s>good1 32 minutes ago It got me thinking about the number of times Barnsley fans have built up our players only for the minority to get on their backs at the smallest opportunity. Nicky Eaden springs to mind, some of the stick he got was totally uncalled for. What does it achieve? In the case of Butts, we've got a quality, influential player here who has contirbuted massively to the league position we find ourselves in and some fans seem to want to do him down. You've got to wonder what sort of effect this has on a young footballers confidence? It's not helping him is it? It's clearly bothering him. Maybe this is part of what Hill alluded to in his last interview about wanting more supporters?
We always knock home grown talent for some reason - Eaden as you say but Agnew was the same. We are going to drive him and it's a shame because he's come on in leaps and bounds this year!
It's something that happens to every player at every club and at every level. If he thinks he's having a tough time of it now, let him join a Premier League club or a bigger club in the Championship and see what happens then. The internet is a wonderful tool, but it also allows the opinons of the uninformed and informed alike to be broadcast across the world. It also allows the targets of these opinions to have their say. If you're happy to accept the gushing praise, you have to take the criticism too. Personally, if I was a manager at any club I wouldn't allow any of my players to have a Twitter or facebook account as not may players have got the right mindset. The self pitying nature of the tweet you highlight shows that he has a lot to learn and a lot of growing up to do.
Nowadays though we can have a go at them at all hours, not just for 90 minutes every week. At least before twitter etc the insults were funny and original.
Butterfield was criticised after the second half on Saturday along with others and rightly so. It was hardly a lynch mob baying for blood. I advise he grows a thicker skin if he can only take praise and not criticism.
He should be able to recognise the difference between criticism and insults and if he can't he needs to learn quickly. I dont think anybody has called him **** but people have, on recent performances, quite rightly questioned if he is ready for the premier league. He maybe needs to take the criticism in context and if there are a small minority giving him insults maybe he should learn to ignore them.
He hasn't done anything to merit the criticism he's received. Not one of our players deserves criticism to the level he's had. I understand being critical on performances but you have to put them in context and think why he/they may have performed like that, you can't be a world beater every week. He's our most influential player that unlocks the doors nobody else in our side can, some of the crap that people spout is ridiculous. It's like a playground of jealous little school girls on here sometimes.
Seriously, is anyone falling for this faux disenchantment? Fair enough, he's received some unfair criticism but this smacks of formulating an excuse so he can swan off in January - "the fans didn't appreciate me". Next week - "Barnsley need to show more ambition for me to stick around".
I have a serious issue with Butterfield: We are in the middle of a Eurozone crisis. Our government is tearing itself apart. We are on the brink of a double dip recession. Neutrinos have allegedly been detected travelling faster than the speed of light. Men are wearing tight, rolled up chinos - and boots without laces. What is Jacob Butterfield doing about these issues? That's what I want to know. 6 assists & 1 goal in 4 games may be clever - but these are issues that need addressing. Come on, Jacob, pull your finger out lad.
how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket I reckon a lot of people have absolutely every right to say exactly how they feel about anyone of them
Re: how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket Ah it's a jealousy thing? Now we're getting somewhere!
how naive an answer jealousy is by no means an isue, well certainly not from me. So was Allan Clarke Jealous when he took his charges down a pit an told them.."thats real work lads" I think maybe Mr Clarke, given his career would not have been jealous. Many make their feelings and opinions clear about players attitudes and performances, but that by no means makes them jealous. What a truly bizzarre reply.
Re: how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket Still waiting to be shown any of the abuse, venom, garbage and now, 'unfair' criticism on this board. When I said he went AWOL 2nd half, along with a few other players, was THAT unfair, or abusive? Venomous even?
Re: how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket I agree with your sentiments mate.
Has anyone considered that he may not be talking about fans criticism? Maybe someone in the club has had a pop at him for giving up in the last 10 minutes when he was pushed wide?
Re: how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket If you're talking about my comments Whitey I was trying to make a general point and agree with you with regards constructive criticisim. Many of the team did go missing in the second half. Tweeting abuse to him and posting he's not good enough to make it in the prem isn't constructive though. Quite the opposite!
Re: how many hours a week does he put and whats at the bottom of his paypacket I didnt mean anyone tbf, as I couldnt remember who posted what. But I definitely read some posts that mentioned "venom" and "abuse" directed at Jacob on ere. And I havent seen owt like that. Unfair criticism? Meh, thats subjective isnt it? The way people are going on, I thought I had missed a deluge of posts saying sh*t like "thar a useless get" or "**** off to the Prem you overrated barsteward" I mean, I said he bossed the game 1st half. But conversely, I said he went AWOL after the break. So I just wondered if that was an unfair comment or not. Because, everybody I have spoke to about the game since setdi, has said exactly that - he went missing. He hid away, wanted none of it, and didnt act like a captain. So if I preach on ere - as I do - about how I always say it how I see it, and I praise him every time he does well, then surely I am only being fair when admitting he was poor..? I dunno. Anyone for tennis??
Just a thought ... Brian clough once said some players need a kick up the backside, some need an arm over the shoulder. Yes fans are entitled to express their views, but has Butterfield been bad? Really? Hardly! He had 45 mins where he, amongst others got bullied. Otherwise he's been very good this season. Do we want to grind him into the ground? Or do we want to get the best out of him? People forget he's a young lad, because he's been around the team for so long. I'm not a big fan of footballers outside of the game, but I do think he needs to be cut a little slack and have an arm 'round his shoulder just now. I'd like to see him stay. Tell me any other players of such talent that have come thru the club. ( I know we signed him, but he's been here a long time).
