You're the chairman of a football club in a small town averaging about 9,000 home supporters for games plus away fans.

Your manager pre season bought 3 strikers. £200k on a lad from a lower leage side. "The biggest transfer fee since Neil Shipperley" (which was £700k) on a South American and an undisclosed amount on a Danish U-21 international.

In addition the manager signs an experienced Championship defender on top money and an experienced midfielder.

It gets to the turn of the year and the team is struggling. The new strikers have not settled in well, and the Danish lad can't get on the bench. The experienced top wages defender just makes the bench and the experinced midfielder is bombed out. In addition, it appears that the early season success wasn't due to the entire new squad purchased, but in fact was down to loan players, all of whom have gone back to their clubs.

To 'save' the season it would now appear that 2 of the former loanness have to be brought back permanently. Both are currently on Premiership wages whilst we have 9,000 home fans remember.

    What would you do ?

Personally, I think I'd put all my eggs in 1 basket and keep my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong, or that those 2 eggs will take dramatic wage cuts, straight away without questioning it.

"Really? you want more money then your wife who drops off betterware catalogues, bugger, well that's my early January gameplan ******"

I'd also probably blame the 'stay away' fans for this incredible strategy.

That's what I'd do, in theory.

From the criteria listed there and as a damage limitation measure it looks like, before anything else, replace the bloke who selects the signings.

Is this 9,000 a fixed figure or can it go up if we, say, challenged for the play-offs or down if we displayed a lack of ambition?

It only seems to go up these days for local derbies and play-off semi finals.

That's not excusing the lack of imagination from the Board of Directors with regard to ALL ticket pricing. Free buses to Southend aside.

    I'd...

look at what relgation would cost and compare that with the value of staying up and getting £750k in prize money and then tell the manager that I expect a mid table finish with the addition of these two/three players.

And when we finish fourth bottom I'd say we'd made progress
