I mean, I know it has been discussed, but if we'd seen this in some sort of High-budget disaster movie, then we'd have all thought it was far-fetched or that the CGI was a bit over-the-top. Really is pretty frightening.
This is climate change in action. It's a shame other disasters haven't got the coverage this has, but just today, reports were released that showed 2024 was the hottest year on record and was 1.6 degrees over pre industrial levels. I'll paraphrase, but it was succinctly put by one climate scientist. Despite the last 10 years all appearing in the hottest 10 years on record, by 2100, 2024 won't register in the top 50 of the century.
Just got off facetime to my daughter in Sydney - there was a bush fire last week that scorched an area the size of Singapore. But because it didn't get near the East Coast conurbations, it barely registered on the news.
We are really starting to see the effects of the climate disaster, it will only get worse when tipping points like the end of the Gulf Stream happen. A few years ago, my son went to Switzerland on an exchange visit for his PhD and sent photos from a glacier showing how far down the surface of the ice was compared to previous years.
Glaciers have been receding for a long time, but the speed over the last decade is truly frightening with some virtually gone. Yet you've stories today saying we need more gas (Centrica saying stocks are low) and low temperatures which will undoubtedly push the populists to again state climate change isn't a thing. What I do find bizarre is not just the sloth like speed in which we're trying to reduce emissions, but that so little is being done to adapt to the increased occurrence of flood and fire risk and houses are still being built that aren't good enough for future need.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...t-la-kenneth-wildfires-identity-b2677142.html Don't know how true it is, i mean if he did start it or if they are just looking for some one to blame.
Shame on Trump for politicising this by blaming the cause on the Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsome, with Trump's usual mendacity. He's even that childish he tweets the governor as Gavin Newscum. When Trump takes up office it will be interesting to see how much federal help he allocates to LA.
https://ktla.com/news/local-news/arson-suspect-arrested-in-woodland-hills-near-kenneth-fire/ Could have been arson not climate change. If someone started the fire on purpose that spread, they won't ever be released and quite right too.
Climate change is always likely to make the UK have more extreme weather. Losing the Gulf Stream will see colder winters and hotter, drier summers with bigger storms.
The source of ignition is irrelevant, the conditions that have caused the fires to spread so quickly and grow as they have done are a consequence of climate change.
And the USA have just elected a climate change denier as their president. What could possibly go wrong.
we were saying the same last night watching the news. I am getting more and more annoyed by the news though, with Hollywood A lister so and so has had their house burnt down, I mean I really do sympathise and I'm sure they will have lost some sentimental stuff but they are in a helluva better position to get over it than Joe Bloggs who has lost everything who seldom gets a mention!
While I agree with the majority of your post, the first 6 words are definitely wrong. Of course the ignition is relevant.
It really isn't. If your house was to blow up in a gas explosion it wouldn't matter if it'd done so by you turning the TV on or by lighting a *** - the issue is the leak creating the conditions for it to explode. If your point is that catching the arsonist is relevant then yes, of course, but in the statement "it could have been arson not climate change" wether it's arson, an accident, or whatever, the source of ignition doesn't matter, it's that the conditions for these fires have been exacerbated by climate change.
We’re just beside Hollywood and luckily not in the Evac zone but our apartment has been without power for 4 days now, water and air terrible
One of the lads in my village when we were both around 20yrs of age. He was an arsonist. They caught him via his 999 calls reporting the fire. And the fact he was around the scene on every occasion. Can't remember what his sentence was. Wouldnt surprise me one bit that the man accused in LA. Is found guilty. Fekkin idiot. If so.
Not LA related, but CA related. I was semi-awake around 7:00 this morning; around the time I usually get up. I heard a strange sound; like a whoosh and a bang, but I couldn't work out whether it was inside, or outside of my condo. I got up and decided to watch the BBL, to then find an alert on my iPhone for a 3.7 earthquake, 9.1 miles away at the other side of SF. There's always something happening.
Completely agree. The other year when we had so many fires in the UK, all down to persistent hot weather and no rain for ages. Many started by unknown arsonists who were too lazy to hold onto litter and dispose of it properly, or even idiots having barbecues against advice.
