Lack Of Investment, Lack Of Judgement, Lack Of Trust?

Yep - another dissatisfaction thread (sorry Red Rain).

No-one really expected Andy Ritchie's side to get promoted against the odds. If any of our more recent managerial casualties had earned the right to more time, it was surely Ritchie? The situation was certainly retrievable at the time of his departure. Academy coach (cheap option). Lack of investment in a good replacement. Surprise, surprise - it goes wrong.

Robins begins to build. Okay - progress was patchy. But here's a team beginning to be built around players like Shackell (I know there may have been other issues there) and Butterfield. That's the thinking. What do we do? Cut the budget. Lack of investment and lack of judgement. Robins walks.

Cheap option. Hill. We cut the budget, and stay up partly because of another club's 10 point deduction. Success? Ha! Surprise, surprise - things go wrong. We sack Hill and appoint his loyal apprentice. We stay up - arguably partly because of an added time goal for Palace from a free kick that should never have been awarded. Success? Ha! Surprise, surprise - it goes wrong next season.

We appoint Danny. Didn't go well. But are we in danger? Here's the breach of trust. This argument is very well made by Whitey in his latest 'Not A Podcast'. Is Danny's sacking consistent with tolerating what we are seeing now - both in performances and results? Do the sackings of Ritchie and Wilson add up? Breach of trust? You decide!

Sure, swapping and changing managers hasn't worked well for us. But do we compound the errors of sacking decent blokes like Ritchie, Robins and Wilson by sticking with a guy who has produced the worst results in our lifetime? Even if you excuse Johnson on the recruitment side (and that's not totally clear) his tinkering and lack of ability to organise and motivate is dragging us further into the mire. Who do we appoint? I don't know. But here's a thought. Clarke, Hunter, Wilson, Ritchie, Robins - what did they have in common? They all played for good managers at the highest level. Food for thought?

But it's not just the team manager that needs to change. There is no overall guidance. I believe that purely on the administrative side, Ben Mansford is probably a good CEO. But he hasn't got a grip of the football side of things. The rarely-seen Watkins (senior) has provided little demonstrable benefit. We could do with a commanding Director of Football (or something similar) so that the opaque tinkering and strategy behind the scenes doesn't undermine the efforts of a proper, experienced manager.

I did think that before Saturday, there might just have been a glimmer of some improvement. But taking the last two home games together, it's as bad as I've seen. Fleetwood for a fiver? No thanks. Wembley - just to get stuffed by a smarter Millwall side? No thanks. I'm struggling to summon up much enthusiasm to go down for Blackpool on Monday - even if it is already paid for through my ST.

It's desperate folks, and something (probably lots of things) has to change.

But you brushed past Mr Davey. He was a very unpopular choice that many of us never warmed to. But to be fair to him, he actually did a pretty decent job. We should give him more credit! We haven't improved since he left.

He was a good coach. Handled pressure well, especially negativity from fans. He was tactically aware and wasn't afraid to take risks, his team entertained us in the main, they got us to Wembley in FA Cup, he had a wide scouting network and but was criticised for signing to many foreign players and veterans. He actuallt signed some interesting players along the way. Some worked a will go down as Legends others flopped. Signings included Steele, Muller, El Hameiur, Werling, Naytanga, Darren Moore, Tininho, Bruma, Souza, O'Neil Thompson, Sued Filekovic, Colace, Diego Leon, Wallwork, Anderson De Silva, Andy Johnson, Hammill, Halfredson, Andranik Teymourian, Gary Teale, Macken, Ferenczi, Rajczi, Mostto, Julian Gray, Christensen, Rigters, Hume, Odejayi, Bogdanovic, Nardiello (loan 2nd spell), Mifsud, Jamie Cureton.

We are now in the division below, fighting a relegation battle with a polar opposite team. All young, all UK born with exeption of Williams (Australian) and very inexperienced.

I never really gave Davey any credit or appreciated that he had signed so much talent until now. He managed 138 games for the reds, won 45, draws 30, lost 63 (32.61% win ratio) and took us took us to FA Cup semi at Wembley. As fans we often focus on the negatives. So I will say a belated well done, thank you and Merry Christmas to Simon!

Johnson on the other hand, his appointment got fans backing. But results have been poor, Signings have been poor, squad is weak unbalanced and inexperienced, we are being outfought/outplayed in games, we lack motivation, positional discipline and tatics are all over the place, we don't have a plan B. Unless Johnson changes his tune and quick we will be through the trap door on League 2.

I'm not sure that's what I was saying, mate.

 

Don't wish to cloud your message, Whitey. But you put in my mind that the reasons given for parting with Danny don't appear to stack up in the light of Johnson being treated differently. So are the reasons for sacking Danny to be trusted/taken at face value? Maybe I've taken it on a bit, but it's a question, no?

 

It is, mate. But my point when referring to both this and that season and this and that manager was how we had the right man to build with, long term. Last season was the transitional season. But the club have made this transitional too and are backing the wrong hoss.

In other words, they've ****** up, as I said in the video. But I'm not sure it's owt dodgy, I genuinely think they felt they could do better and that Johnson was that man. They ****** up. And are now clinging on (like Lee is) unable to admit their error. In my ******** opinion.
