Can yer remember when Pete was holding the fort and talking about sweating the assets
If I remember right - it was reported that Barnsley had the biggest land holding around the ground of any league club
And again if I remember right the figure was in the region of 36 acres
At a guess I would say the ground and the academy stand on less than 16 acres
If I were Pat Cryne I would be looking at off loading the rest of this spare land and putting the money into building a decent West Stand
You can build a lot of houses on 20+ acres of land
This land would probably be worth millions

    can i just ask you

why does it have to be Symmetrical as you said below? for one if it cost any extra to increase the capcity its a waste of time. If the money cant be for players then use it to improve other things around the stadium. Because even in the play off season we didnt fill the ground except for 2 or 3 games i think? its a long way back to those hights. What about social club on back of ponty? and maybe even sticking the numbers back on the seats!!

why the hell do we need a new stand?

We need to get promoted and more! Building a stand with the money is as bad or worse than when JD built the Ashley Ward stand.

Pump money into the team, not the ground!

As mentioned before it can't happen out of the sale of the land proceeds.

They can build on anything nowadays

    I see your point though.

If I'm right, a large proportion of the land the club owns is behind the east stand, which basically consists of a pretty big hill and a stream. Not ideal development material.

tyketastic - why does it need to be symmetrical ?

Because it needs to look attractive
There should be a long term objective on how the ground should look
And just because we are getting 75000 fans through the gate now doesent mean to say there will be 75000 in 3, 5 or 10 years time.
We need to be ready for bigger crowds if and when we get them.
Can tha remember the premeirship 16,500 capacity gates
We don't want to be caught out like that again
As for a social club - who the hell wants to sit sat supping beer in a social club when we have a great TARN centre on the door step
If we were a club like Wendy or Blunts or Donny that dont have a town centre near the ground then fair enough
But we have a chuffing great TARN centre - sometimes I get intut TARN centre on Satdi afternoon and Im often in two minds whether to go darn tut ground or stay int pubs

The point is that the vast majority of any new seats would remain empty unless the club got into the premiership. Ie money spent on nowt.

If a social club was built it would help generate money which could be used to fund other things as well as strengthening the relationship between fans and the club.

Every new stand/stadium built these days has other things incorporated into it i.e function rooms, casino's, gyms etc that are used to make money. You can't sink millions into a building and only have it used for 23 days of the year.

The club doesn't own any land at all

No streams, hills, flat bits or anything.

I know I'm going to get through to someone with this eventually.

    Social club and empty seats

I agree with - incorporated into a new stand i.e function rooms, casino's, gyms etc that are used to make money. You can't sink millions into a building and only have it used for 23 days of the year.
But a social club would just add another beer selling place to all the other beer selling places. The Mount acts as the social club at the moment.

My own thoughts on empty seats is this - the directors know what we can afford to do with the team in the short and long term
They will have an idea on what gates to expect, although it is worth mentioning that the potential at Barnsley FC has never been realised yet.
My own theory is that we need a modern ground that will hold near to 30,000
This modern ground should incorporate other facilities such as function rooms, casino's, gyms etc etc.

Right, so half the proceeds back to the Council, half to OCA. How's the money get from OCA to BFC?
