Laptop help

Looking to buy a laptop. Can anyone give me an idea of what makes to go for and which to avoid?
Any help appreciated.

Tosh good, but . . .

. . . fans loud. Heard good things about Acer but not had one myself.

Just got one about 4 months ago, it is very good for what I use it for.
