I've had a look around and the basic Dell Inspirion 1525 is £329 incVAT and delivery.

or Toshiba Satellite Pro L40-17E is £300 incVAT and delivery.

anybody got any helpful advise as to which is best etc.?

We've got both in our house

Would recommend them both to be honest - just have a look at the spec for the money you're paying and pick the one with the best one - e.g. memory , hard drive and so on. Oh I've got the Toshiba one and have been very pleased with it

very helpful toshiba has edged in frontby a nose! Both seem to have exact same memory and spec although the DELL sez it has a HD screen but this is not mentioned on the TOSHIBA?

Might be worth a look on Dell Outlet. I was looking the other day and there was an Inspiron notebook with 2048 memory, a 120Gb hard drive and a dualcore pentium chip. It was around the same money.

We've got two Dell laptops and a desktop in the family and never had bother.

I've gone for the TOSHIBA Sat Pro A210-1AZ for £350 inc. delivery with a £50 cash back offer if I register it in time. got it from dabs.com

Ta for your help I know who to blame if it's worse than the DELL latitude I've got from work!!!

Dunno how much they are now, but Mac's are easily the best laptops around.

I've had a dell with my oldjob and it was faultless. I noe have a toshiba and it has again been faultless. The toshiba seems better built and the trouble with dell is you have to go direct tem for spares etc. I'd recommend toshiba anyday!

    Medion

But Sony are very good (if you can afford).

A lot of people do tend to pay for the name. I saw a great laptop in Aldi the other week, Medion - 160gb HD, 2gb DDR, 1.6GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core CPU, DVD writer, 256mb graphics, with a 17 inch display.

    It was £300.

They still have it in, get down there and get one bought. I'm going down for one.
