He played the best back 4 available, the preferred front 2 and gave the regular central midfielders a rest, playing Richard Kell, for his 1st start in 9 months. So it's hardly surprising if he found the pace of the game a struggle. Once they cross the white line, they are responsible for their own performances and commitment. It sounds like that was sadly lacking. You sometimes get this with a team of which the majority are young lads. They can be a bit hit and miss. Perhaps we need a touch more experience in the side or coaching to help bring our younger players along. Anyway, glad we're out of the cup. Last thing we need is 2 games per week right now. Tits and fannies.
I agree with Dirk. If I was on a couple of grand a week I'd happily want to cut down my workload by 50%. I'd also realise that I may only get 7 or 8 goes at doing something decent in one of the biggest cup competitions on the planet during my career - so it's not really a problem. So - raise your drinks to Andy & the lads. Quitting is good. No spines required.
I didnt go last night, so my opinion doesnt count, but... it sounds like we missed burns to break their play up and put himself about in midfield. But for the last month we have been bypassing the midfield with the long ball. Maybe Ritchie was trying to get the passing game going again, by putting Kell and Howard in there. However he has to realise it didnt work and put burns back in. He has been the player of the season, and needs to start when fit because he breaks up so much of the opposition play. I dont know who to start alongside him though.
Losing games however pointless, does nothing for confidence. we go into Saturdays game under pressure, on the back of 2 defeats, lacking belief, several players out of form and the manager not knowing our best team. well, I think he's realised Kell aint nowhere near ready, that Burns is our 'MVP', that Reid and Carbon dont keep clean sheets and that if we dont win, the reception from the crowd will be hostile. Colgan Hassell Kay Reid Heckinbottom Shuker Burns McPhail Howard Hayes Wright Wright needs the same pep talk that he gave Devaney after his first 5 games ie honeymoon period over, start delivering sharpish.
I said after the third draw ... ... that at the end of the season we will look at the bag of w4nk sides that got promoted & think ''kinell fire - we were better than they were, have we just missed a golden opportunity?''. Some of our spacktastic fans have claimed int he past that the board have no ambition. It's not the case at the moment. The Manager has none. And football is still ****.
of all the starting pairs of centre backs Reid and Carbon have... the most clean sheets- four out of the eight
trouble is..... he has played one more game now!
http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/bbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=19268&mid=118510#M118510

Are you counting the games where Carbon goes off injured? keeping a clean sheet for 45 minutes doesnt count.
nowt wrong with giving Kell a run out He's got to build up his fitness. But Ritchie then has to the monitor the situation. If the midfield really were as overrun and kell really was as anonymous as Radio Sheffield made out, then Burns should have been brought on at half time when we were still in the game. To wait until they've scored to make the substitution just seems ******* stupid to me. 5 games since Wright arrived, 4 different strike partnerships, 1 goal from the strikers.
Wright needs a goal he's missed some one on ones, but I dont think he's the type of player to round the keeper, thats Nardiellos game. more likely Wright will get his head on cross/set piece, needs quality service for that.
the only game he was subbed in.... where we kept a clean sheet was Oldham at home when we were 3-0 at half time -Tonge came on for the second half and Hassell moved to the centre
He'll not get a better chance with a header than he did at Port Vale 4 yards out, middle of the goal, straight on his head. He missed it. Carbon scored the rebound like, but still.
no way should reid be played he was truly awful last night. i know carbon is injury prone and im the first to berate him for it. But he was only one diging in last night. Hassell was shocking too. As for the front two it dont matter which two he picks if we insist on launching it long to them all day.
He needs one to go in most strikers have a lean spell at some time or other, lets hope he comes good. Blunts are about to spend almost £2million on Akinbyi and I remember a time that couldnt buy a goal at Leicester.
