Susan Bullock was rather tiresome - unless you like Wagner! Wish it had been Sandra! Lang Lang, by way of contrast, was sensational! The Frankie Dettori of classical piano music! Plays Liszt and Chopin with real passion. I thought the rest of the traditional bits were somewhat tired. And no nod in the direction of 9/11 remembrance!
Nay, nay, Thereev - just trying to raise the tone on here! Wonder if it was £30 to get in the RAH last night?
Anyway, what about the Arc trials? I wish they'd run Sea Moon, a) because there'd be a good chance of soft ground - which he seems to need on the evidence of yesterday and b) because the Kaht kroner are on at 16/1!
Tell u what, I was gobsmacked by that crowd in Hyde Park and elsewhere. Is that a recent thing? I missed most of last nights show, just caught the end waiting for MOTD to come on. All I can say is that whilst it's not my thing, having been to one of the Proms this year, free of charge (Horrible histories one for kids), it is an amazing experience, and a fantastic venue. I can see how it would be the pinnacle for folks who are into classical music.
Not sure how long they've done that, Fired. But I know it goes back as far as 1999 at least. I've got that year's "Last Night" on old VHS vid. Sir Willard White on, and Jeremy Irons doing a fantastic take on a bunch of Noel Coward songs. That was a vintage one - must try and get it transferred to DVD!
My mum used to love it all... Remember watching it year after year with her. Not seen it for years though .... Those whacky promenaders ..... He he
I used to really enjoy it but must admit I haven't seen it for a few years now. I used to love Land of Hope and Glory - very stirring stuff.
It's for the same people who like fox hunting, wearing blazers on their day off, saying "yah" and kissing Thatcher's arse.
Just so you know the Proms were introduced so that music could be brought to the general (working class) public...(low cost etc). Totally the opposite of what you're describing. Not my thing, but if folks like it, I don't see the problem.
The proms = a season of events. The last night of the proms is effectively the FA cup final. So obviously the ticket price would be higher. I went to a proms event this year with my kids at the royal Albert hall. Full house. The place was full of tourists, kids, families, working class people, posh people. The cost to me and everyone else? Nothing. So yes. Giving them away. As intended, when the proms were thought up.
I didn't tune in until the Susan Bullock item. I agree it was tiresome, and really rather demeaning. Jerusalem, I thought was good. Love that hymn, and it should be the National Anthem.
My grans going next year with a team of ex and current school dinner ladies a majority of them are actually performing on stage with the choir they represent. They aren't into fox hunting they don't say yah. all from barnsley that hot bed of thatcherism
We went to the comedy proms and Susan Bullock was fantastic that night. But I did not see the last night so cannot comment. But Wagner is not my cup of tea.
