    I know

That was part of my point. It can happen. Incidentally that is the only time a team has been relegated with 14 wins since Tier 2 was extended to 24 teams in 1988/89.

    Mmm...you're right

...but don't know why. They finished 3rd from bottom, so there must have been only 2 teams relegated that season for some reason.

Even better then. No team has been relegated from Tier 2 with 14 wins since it was extended to 24 teams!

Which year did the 3rd bottom side stop going into the playoffs?

Or was it the Swindon affair?

It's all coming back to me now

The season we were on the pitch after beating Middlesboro 1-0 thinking we were in the play offs (but Brighton got that last minute goal against Ipswich). I can remember blubbering for a few years afterwards that even when 7th qualified for the Play Offs we finished 8th!

And then a few years later - when only 1 team went up automatically (think Reading finished 2nd), didn't we then finish 6th but had to finish top 5.

    Those were the days

...when I thought we were always going to dodge success! Then came the Premier, Wembley & Cardiff!
