I know That was part of my point. It can happen. Incidentally that is the only time a team has been relegated with 14 wins since Tier 2 was extended to 24 teams in 1988/89.
Mmm...you're right ...but don't know why. They finished 3rd from bottom, so there must have been only 2 teams relegated that season for some reason. Even better then. No team has been relegated from Tier 2 with 14 wins since it was extended to 24 teams!
Trying to work that out Checked division 3, 4 were promoted. Only 2 relegated from top division - they extended it from 20 to 22. So allowed 4 promoted from division 2 so had to relegate 2 and promote 4 into div 2 http://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/LeagueTables/Season1990-91/Div11990-91.htm http://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/LeagueTables/Season1990-91/Div21990-91.htm http://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/LeagueTables/Season1990-91/Div31990-91.htm
It's all coming back to me now The season we were on the pitch after beating Middlesboro 1-0 thinking we were in the play offs (but Brighton got that last minute goal against Ipswich). I can remember blubbering for a few years afterwards that even when 7th qualified for the Play Offs we finished 8th!
RE: It's all coming back to me now And then a few years later - when only 1 team went up automatically (think Reading finished 2nd), didn't we then finish 6th but had to finish top 5.
1987-88 http://www.footballsite.co.uk/Statistics/LeagueTables/Season1987-88/Div11987-88.htm Only happened for 2 seasons
Those were the days ...when I thought we were always going to dodge success! Then came the Premier, Wembley & Cardiff!
