One demijohn. 4.5 L of Aldi apple juice. £2.50 1 pound of sugar. 60p One sachet of cider yeast. £1.10 Bottled it yesterday, tried it last night. Couldn't finish it. Too powerful. It actually tastes more like a strong sweet wine, which is ok for drinking in wine glass quantity, but as a pint to be quaffed liberally I wouldn't recommend it. One gallon of by-eck, bloody hell, oh me fkin head, for £4.20.
You need to make sure the juice is preservative free...if it has preservatives it could well stop the yeast working properly...hence the sweetness. If you're intending to do it on a regular basis it would be worth investing in a hydrometer ( saccharometer to be precise)....get the best one available.
Thanks. I've got most of the tackle required as we, about 6 or more blokes in the village, make our own proper cider from real apples in the autumn. In the absence of apples I occasionally revert to turbo cider just for a lark. I added a pound of sugar deliberately to push up the abv level but even I was surprised at the end result. As far as I know the juice doesn't have any extras in it, it says 100% concentrate, but as I've thrown away the cartons I don't remember if there were any preservatives. However I think the yeast has worked ok, 11.5% would suggest it has. Even with proper apple cider I still do not know how to make the end result sweet. As you may know adding extra sugar at the start doesn't make it sweeter, it makes it stronger. I could add some sort of artificial sweetener at the end but I don't want to. I like to do a natural process. The results are very good.
