DOCTORS told chronically ill Laura Herring she would need a kidney transplant by the time she was 13.
But with three months to go before the milestone birthday she is holding her own and good results from a kidney function test mean she does not even need to start dialysis yet.
Laura was one when she was diagnosed with cystinosis, a rare disease which affects only 150 children in the country.
Sufferers face kidney failure between the ages of 9 and 13, stunted growth, muscle waisting and problems with their joints and eyesight.
Laura, of Barnsley, recently had pins put in her legs to correct the way her bones are developing and she also suffers from arthrites.
Despite being in pain every day she is determined to help others and apart from being involved with a variety of charities she mentors children with cystinosis.
Many of them are on the transplant list, even though Laura's condition was much more advanced when they first got in touch.
Mum Crystal thinks her daughter maybe progressing at a slower rate because of her positive mental attitude.
Two years ago alternative therapies such as meditation and crystal healing began to play a large part in Lauras life. she had been advised to try them by Local GP.
She said "They make me relax more, if im in pain I'll hold one of my crystals and i feel a lot calmer."
Crystal is keeping an open mind to the unconventional treatments for Laura's sake.
She said "If she feels she is benefiting from it then i can't say its not helping because I can tell from her moods that she feels better."

thanks A good report but I wish that Crystal could have given them a fake name, I got slightly confused at one point.
