They look all over the shop to me. No logical pattern to his remarks, and the suspicion grows that he is massively over-complicating things. As others have said, he is an impressive speaker, and I think we've no option but to stand by him and see how things shape up. But we look like writing this season off as an experiment. Really hope he succeeds, but I don't know that his ideas are suited to League One progress.
The main thing i picked up on were his comments on the work they have been doing on communication. "if we had a 35yr old midfielder we wouldnt have to do that kind of work" An admission of making a mistake at not getting experience in ?, or, a message to mansford and cryne who dont appear to want to go that route ?
A 35 year old midfielder can communicate but they can't do much else as effectively as someone 10 years younger. You can't learn to be younger but you can learn to communicate.
Three things which have marked successful league one teams: 1. An emphasis on youth, rather than experience. 2. Not just bringing in more players if the team makes a dodgy start - make the current squad feel wanted and use some untried youngsters from time to time. 3. Play a five-man midfield with flexibility and pace down the flanks and versatility behind the striker(s) with midfielders who will score. The model seems right to me and I think it was right to change the formula to 'head coach' and try to succeed with this format. I am still optimistic that it will come good, but that players will be given a proper chance to prove themselves and replaced only if we can genuinely strengthen that aspect of the squad. Keep the faith!
I Agree. Maybe 35 was a slight exaggeration, who knows, but its pretty clear the squad is in need of a couple of older head, been there and done it types, even if its just a squad role and not in starting 11 every week. My comments may be as wide of the mark has that craig davies penalty, they are just how they came across to me
We will see how much his comments mean because reading between the lines I can see Smith back in at LB and Lewin back to CB.
All three promoted teams had players over 30 in their squad. Players who were key parts of their match day 11 not bit part players
They did indeed with Preston playing Beckford and garner up front together clocking up 45 goals and 58 years by the end of the season.
