So we get Lee Williamson from Rotherham
Where does this leave Tonge, Wroe, Kay and all the other midfielders coming through the Academy
My own view is that Barnsley should pull the plug on the Academy and cherry pick Bosmans instead - it would be much cheaper
Plus its not fair to bring young kids through the academy and give them high hopes only for them to end up playing at Macclesfield

So you whinge that we don't sign anyone...

and then whinge that we try to sign a young, highly-rated midfielder because it leaves Nicky Wroe out to dry?

    :pff

    Correct...

    ...get shut.

We have only got the prospect of making £1 million from it from one player.

And it has only produced players like Kay, Austin, Tonge etc who played a major role in our promotion last season.

We would have even less of a squad without the academy - problem is you cannot guarentee that the players are going to be good enough. Nicky Wroe isn't.

    You just moan about owt.

So what is the point of the Barnsley Academy

We have had 2 decent guys through the academy
Kay and Flinders........both are/were worth a price tag
The rest we could replace by Bosmans
How much money has it taken to get all the other players through the academy
What is the point of the academy - its a reasonable enough question to ask
Or is it that the academy guys playing in the first team are payed relatively low wages compared to Bosman signings

Flinders was more luck than Judgement.

If Ross Turnbull hadn't got injured Flinders would never have played for the club and would have been released at the end of that season.

    Careful.

    You'll get the 'Crewe' argument.

That's Crewe. Recently relegated, Division One Crewe.

    Shining model.

    The Academy

Most of the costs have been spent already with the infrastructure.</p>

The cost of retaining acadamy status maybe about 150k/pa in additional staff required above retaining a reasonable youth set up.</p>

Flinders has likely gone for 600k up front ie 4 years operating costs.</p>

Theres another Tommy Taylor out there........................

Every so often the Academy will unearth a real diamond of a player.</p>That 6 year old who is running around in a back garden somewhere in the district could well be the next Tommy Taylor. Or if you are only a young un, a Wayne Roony.

The Academy is producing a better player than the old youth system did and that will gradually feed through to the 1st team squad. That doesn't mean that 5 out of ten players going into it will make the grade. You will still only get 1 or 2 per year group who will make the grade if you are lucky. There are still only a limited number of places in the pro ranks for players coming through the system.

One purpose of the Academy system when it was set up by Howard Wilkinson was to give the youngsters in it a better deal than they had previously under the old apprenticeship. The young players receive more than just a football education now and generally get a fairer deal than in the past. Coaching and medical back up is also much better than in the old days.

We should also remember that some of the Academy facilities are also used by the 1st team.

Sheffield United credit their consistancy over a season to being able to train inside their Academy when the outside pitches are unfit. Our lads also train indoors when the weather is too bad.

"The Academy is producing a better player than the old youth system did"

    Is it?
Better than McCarthy, Banks, Hirst, Agnew, Tiler, Liddle, Watson, Eaden to name but a few. I haven't seen them.

I was surprised by that comment as well.

It may have produced &quot;numbers&quot; but are they of any quality?

Those names span 15 years or more

how long has the acadamy been going?</p>

How much money would we save, indeed would we be allowed to if we wanted to, if we reverted back to the old system?</p>

I doubt we could go back and I doubt it would save that much in any case.</p>

What's going to be next............when you do get your seat bought it'll be "there's too much plastic on it", and when you get a replacement "crap metal, preferred the plastic".

RE: and how much do you propose to save by doing so?

Nothing wrong with he acadamey,if the player is good enough he will make it.

There is nothing that guarentees a player that he will play in the 1st time at the end of the acadamy, but if he has done well then a contract will be offered.

The vast majority of players over the...........well some years now have all played a role in the 1st team and represented the acadamy structure well.

If big clubs comment on the set up Celtic and Liverpool to mention who actually were well impressed of the set up,then something must be right.

I'm not arguing one way or the other

I'm just stating that the young players that have come through since the academy opened are not of a better quality than were produced in the past. In fact, I'd argue that we're long overdue considerably better talent.
